How to Make the Most Powerful Anti-Cancer Turmeric Tea Ever
For as long as I can remember, my grandmother swore by the health benefits of turmeric. It would sit in a glass jar in my grandmother’s kitchen cabinet, taking up holy space. Now, more and more research shows that this asian spice has numerous health benefits, which includes preventing cancer! In fact, curcumin, the main ingredient in turmeric, has more scientific research supporting its usefulness against cancer than any other nutrient!
Today, we are going to share a recipe full of healthful ingredients that help prevent cancer and other health problems. In addition to coconut oil, this tea includes almond milk, turmeric, caraway seeds and cumin, all of which have anti-cancer properties! This hearty drink is best to enjoy before sleeping, as its warmth will help you go to sleep better and faster!
Why These Ingredients?
Benefits of Turmeric
Curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Inflammation is a major condition that can lead to cancer, and curcumin helps prevent and reduce inflammation. Also, due to being a powerful antioxidant, it also helps reduce toxins in the body. Too many toxins in the body can also help cancer form, so getting rid of them really helps prevent it in the first place.
A lot of studies show that curcumin does kill cancer cells and prevent more from growing. It can impact about 700 of our genes, and have a positive effect on more than 160 different processes that happen in our body. It makes our cells work better too.
The ingredients in turmeric are really holistic, and can help manage cholesterol levels, type two diabetes, chronic inflammation in obese individuals, symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and more. It can also help the body if experiencing lung and liver diseases, neurological diseases, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular diseases as well as other problems. Turmeric is something we really want to include in our diets due to its multiple benefits. In our recipe, we will include black pepper corns, as black pepper helps the body absorb the curcumin better.
Benefits of Caraway Seeds
Despite their tiny size, caraway seeds are great to use in cooking as well as for their medicinal benefits. These seeds are full of antioxidants, which as mentioned earlier, remove harmful toxins from the body and so help prevent cancer. They also help against infections. They are filled with healthful essential oils which can also work as antioxidants.
They are also strong source of fiber. The fiber can help prevent colon cancer because the toxins in the food bind with the fiber. Caraway seeds are filled with vitamin A, Vitamin C, as well as B-complex vitamins. They are also an excellent source of minerals like zinc, magnesium, manganese, selenium, calcium, potassium, iron and copper.
Someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding must avoid caraway. There is a chance that it can be harmful especially to the baby. Also, someone with diabetes will want to be careful about using careaway, as it can cause blood sugar levels to drop. It is safe for most people take in small medicinal amounts for up to eight weeks.
Benefits of Cumin
Cumin, a cousin of the caraway seed, is another great antioxidant helpful in preventing cancer. Cumin seeds contain essential minerals and are a genuine source of magnesium and iron. In old latin, this seed is called “panacea”, which means “cure all”. This sentiment towards cumin is shared amongst different cultures; in Arabic, this is called “habbah sawda” or “habbat el baraka” which means “seeds of blessings”.
A major part of cumin is thymoquinone, a powerful antioxidant which is also anti-cancerous and help prevent mutations in the body. Though I wouldn’t recommend it as a stand alone treatment for cancer, it can kill some cancer cells. It really fights against carcinogens and other toxins, which is what we want to include in our diets. It also inspires the glands in our bodies to release more of their own anti-cancerous and detoxifying enzymes.
This seed is powerful against a lot of other health problems and conditions as well. My mom was encouraging me to add a yoghurt-cumin snack into my daily diet for a while. Research shows that it worked wonders for a group of women they were testing on.
A group of scientists in Iran tracked the weight loss efforts of two groups of women who were overweight or obese. Both groups were given dieting advice, and cut back their daily calorie intake by 500. One group also ate 5 grams of yoghurt with a little less than a teaspoon of cumin powder every day, and the other group just had yoghurt without cumin. In the end, for the women who included the daily yoghurt-cumin snack, their weight loss amounts, body fat amounts, and cholesterol level decreased at a dramatically different level than the women losing weight without this step.
The results were major! For example, the women who did eat cumin, they lost 14.64% of their initial body fat level, whereas the other women lost only about 4.91. This is a spice you want to include in your diet!
Benefits of Almond Milk
People would usually make such teas using regular milk, but I choose to substitute in almond milk for a variety of reasons. First of all, a lot of people cannot tolerate regular milk, due to allergies or health condition, and almond milk is a great substitute. Also, nuts, especially almonds, are listed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation can lead to cancer, so reducing such inflammation really helps protect the body.
The Wise Man Turmeric Tea Recipe
¼ teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon coconut oil (organic cold-press unrefined)
¼ teaspoon caraway seeds
½ teaspoon turmeric
1 cup of almond milk (you can also use regular milk or coconut milk)
4 Black peppercorns
In a small pot, sauté together the coconut oil, cumin, caraway seeds, turmeric* and bell pepper corns for about 1 minute, until you can start to smell an aroma.**
Add in the milk, and bring to boil.
When it begins to boil, cook for 3 – 4 more minutes.
Turn off the heat and let the pot sit for 5 minutes, covered with the lid.
Strain to remove the solids, and drink
*We want to be really careful with this ingredient, as it can stain the surfaces it touches.
**You can also choose to skip the sauté in step one, and put all the ingredients together to bring to a boil. However, step 1 really does make it more flavourful.
I like drinking this before bed, as it helps me fall asleep faster. This drink shouldn’t be drunk every single day. If you do decide to drink it for the long term, take enough breaks in between. For example, if you drink it for a week, then take some time off for a week or 2.
Also, if we are diabetic we may want to avoid this drink, or drink it very carefully, as the ingredients in it can decrease blood sugar levels. Also, WebMD states that pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid some of the ingredients, as they might be unsafe for the baby. As always, we want to make sure that the foods we consume are safe for our own individual conditions.
So there we have it. A drink filled with nutritious goodness to help prevent cancer!
