Children. They’re the the apple of a parent’s eye, the future of our world. And quite literally, sometimes a pain in the back. Parents, new and old, can tell you about terrible sleep schedules, rushed quick meals whenever you have a free second, and the stress of being responsible for small children. It’s a labor of love, but it can be really tough on our bodies.

One such place where parents put their bodies at risk is with their children’s car seats. We don’t mean how frustrating it can be to install, but lugging around a bulky car seat with a squirming child can cause come major back pain.

If you’ve ever had to carry one of these, even for a short time, you know how much of a pain it can be. Most people either cradle it with two hands, or hook it like a big, oversized picnic basket. While holding it with two hands can help with the strain, you’re left without a free hand to open doors or reach for anything. Most people end up resorting to holding it with one arm until it gets too painful, and then switching arms.

How To Avoid Back Pain From Car Seats

This back and forth is painful and unnecessary! Lugging around a car seat like this is an easy way to leave you susceptible to chronic neck and back pain. Thankfully, Dr. Emily Puente of Bridge Family Chiropractic in Mansfield, Texas shared a great video on her Facebook page about a great alternative to carrying bulky car seats.

Step 1

Starting with the car seat on the ground, turn it and place it on the side of the arm you’ll be using to carry it. Bend with your knees and loop your arm around the handle of the car seat.

Step 2

After you loop your arm through, turn your wrist and grab the bottom of the car seat with your hand. Your hand and arm should resemble a ‘Z’ shape.

Step 3

Once you have a secure grip, lift the seat with your knees and not your back, and that’s it!

This small adjustment takes a lot of the pressure and strain off of your body, relieve back pain, and let’s you carry your child for longer periods of time, perfect for when you’re out running errands or spending the day with your family.

The Dangers Of Improper Lifting

Most people still aren’t aware of the damage they are causing to their bodies when they lift and carry heavy objects in the wrong position. If these habits aren’t corrected, it can leave you with chronic back pain and muscle injury. Here are 3 of the most common injuries that happen when we lift and carry heavy objects incorrectly: [2]

Muscle Injury

When we lift objects with our backs instead of lifting from the knees, we let our lower back take most of the weight. This added pressure on our lower back muscles can cause tiny tears to form in the muscle leading to pain and making it difficult to move the injured and surrounding tissues.

Joint Injury

Our back has many joints along the spinal column, and when we lift objects properly they are in no danger. But when we use improper lifting techniques, we put these joints at risk and it can cause painful irritation.

Disc Injury

Intervertebral discs are a cushion found between the vertebrae (bones) of our spine. These fibrous discs can bulge or rupture when injured. This kind of injury in the lower back can cause pain that can radiate through the buttocks and the legs.

We all want the best for our children and when it comes to taking care of them, but unfortunately we often forget to take care of ourselves. The best thing you can do for you children is stay healthy and be there for them as they grow. Remember these tips the next time you’re carrying a car seat and never worry about back injuries again!
