How to Use Coconut OIl For Nails that NEVER Break and Hair That NEVER Splits
Surely many of you have already made the switch to coconut oil in the kitchen, but did you know you can also swap out several products in your daily beauty routine for this miracle oil? Not only can it moisturize skin and remove makeup, but this do-it-all ingredient can be incorporated into your everyday regimen in so many ways.
What’s in it that make it so great?
Coconut oil rich in carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals which are good for the human body. It has been used as hair oil for thousands of years, and has shown remarkable results. Certain components in it keep the hair strong, nourished and protected from the effects of premature aging, like baldness and excessive hair loss.
In addition to its common use for the hair, coconut oil has been used on the skin and especially the face for several reasons.
Coconut oil is really high in saturated fats that are comprised of mostly triglycerides, or medium chain fatty acids. This means that once it gets absorbed into the skin, it will keep it smooth to the touch for a long period of time. This fat content helps retain the oil’s natural moisture, meaning the skin, too, will retain moisture and keep hydrated.
This oil is also loaded with three types of acids: lauric, capric, and capryllic. While these three fatty acids each have their own realm of benefits, they work together to give coconut oil its antimicrobial properties. This is why, when it’s applied to the skin, coconut oil can also prevent microbial infections.
Ever wondered why coconut oil is praised for its anti-aging properties? It’s because it also contains vitamin-E, an essential ingredient for healthy skin growth, repair from wear and tear, skin toning, and wrinkle prevention. This is why coconut oil has a long-standing reputation for skin restoration.
Lastly, coconut oil, just like coconuts, are so full of protein which helps keep skin and hair strong, internally and externally. Proteins from the oil continue to mend damaged cells and guarantee healthy tissue development rates.
How you can use it
Here are just a few of the many ways coconut oil can easily be swapped into your every day beauty routine:
If you’re suffering from brittle nail beds and chipped nails, this is a really great at-home remedy for you. Massaging coconut oil into your cuticles and nails on a frequent basis will add moisture and strengthen your nails which will let them grow longer than they’ve ever been.
Nail growth how-to: Massage into your nail beds and fingers in a circular motion before you go to sleep (you’ll want to use high quality, extra virgin coconut oil for this).
Cuticle care how-to: Rub coconut oil into your cuticles and let it penetrate for at least 30 minutes, but you can certainly go as long as you can without washing it off (the longer, the better!). Doing this will help strengthen your cuticles, moisturize the skin around your nails and will get rid of hang nails.
Nail fungus how-to: As a natural anti-fungal, coconut oil is a great remedy to get rid of nail fungus (on your finger nails or toe nails). Massage the oil into the affected area once it has been thoroughly cleaned and dried. Repeat this twice a day until the fungus clears.
You can use coconut oil to remove makeup from anywhere on your face. It breaks up water-resistant substances used in eye shadow and mascara, and helps release them from the skin and eye lashes. The best part about using this as a makeup remover substitute is that you can get right into the sensitive areas (like eye lids) since it’s chemical-free and likely won’t irritate you.
How-to: Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so you’ll want to rub a small amount in the palm of your hands to warm it up. Next, apply it all over your face and gently rub away the makeup with your finger tips. Then wipe it off with a clean towel. Repeat as often as needed. Tip: keep it out of your eyes because it’ll blur your vision a little bit.
When mixed with the right ingredients, coconut oil also makes a great all-natural skin exfoliant for your face and body. It’s easy to make and contains ingredients you’ll already have at home.
How-to: Add 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and 2 tablespoons of cane sugar to a small glass jar and mix well. Voila! You’ve got yourself an organic, chemical-free face and body scrub. Tip: If you want something a little more abrasive, substitute the sugar for salt because it dissolves at a slower rate.
Coconut oil for the hair helps replace lost proteins in both damaged and undamaged strands.
Since this oil is rich in lauric acid, it has a high affinity for hair protein, and can easily penetrate deeply into the hair shaft. It can be used for pre-wash or post-wash hair grooming. The misconception about coconut oil is that it’s only used as a leave-in hair treatment. However, it can be used as a great styling aid as well to combat frizz and split ends.
How-to: Rub a small amount of high quality coconut oil between your hands to warm it up a bit (and remember, a little goes a long way!). Massage the warmed oil into your hair in sections, making sure you get every last strand. Grab a thin-toothed comb and get out all the knots. Tie up your hair in a towel and let it sit for a few hours, or even over night. Wash it out well with a good shampoo. When it comes time to style, you’ll notice you won’t have to use any of your usual products! Your hair will look smooth, shiny and healthy.
Coconut oil is especially good for acne-prone skin because of its anti-fungal properties. Two of the three fatty acids it contains—capric acid and lauric acid—are of the most powerful antimicrobial agents out there. When they’re applied to the skin, it replaces the protective layer that the skin has lost over time from washing and wiping. The loss of this protective layer is what allows bouts of acne to develop. Coconut oil is also a natural anti-inflammatory, meaning skin redness will also diminish with continual use.
How-to: The simplest way to clear your acne is by heating the coconut oil and applying it directly to blemishes in a circular motion using clean fingers. Repeat this twice a day until acne clears.
Tip: If you’re feeling creative, you can make a 100% natural 3-step coconut oil face mask.
Blend together the following ingredients in a small bowl:
5 tablespoons of fresh aloe juice
2 teaspoons of honey
2 tablespoons of coconut oil
Apply the mixture to your entire face and let it sit for 20 minutes. Remove it with warm water. Do this twice a week and you’ll see quite the improvement!
If your hair is looking and feeling brittle from the weather or over-styling, coconut oil will help revive it. It coats the hair strands and protects against damage caused by dyes, extreme heat and the cold, and will even prevent greying. The oil will infuse back into the hair shaft what it has lost over time.
How-to: All you need to do is massage a high-quality coconut oil serum into your scalp and hair each night before bed and wash it out the next morning. Regularly applying coconut oil will ensure enough of it penetrates through. NIUCOCO’s line of vegan, cold-pressed, extra virgin coconut oil is the highest quality on the market, and is a really good product to use for this.
Naturally treats skin conditions
Coconut oil helps prevent against skin aging, but it can also be used to naturally treat various skin conditions. Thanks to its anti-fungal, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, coconut oil can been applied topically to areas affected by psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema.
How-to: This one is simple: rub a small amount of coconut oil onto the inflamed, affected area of skin (no matter where it is on the body) as often as you need until it clears.
