When you think of a typical French cyclist, you probably picture a lean, muscled, athlete in high-tech spandex. France native Robert Marchand fits that description, but he’s also over a century old.
A lifetime ago, Marchand earned an active living as a firefighter. After living through both world wars, he spent time as a truck driver in Venezuela. His life became even richer after retirement, when he decided to take up cycling again.
Cycling as a Centenarian
Marchand cycled at home on a stationary bike and around his Paris neighborhood. One day, he reached out to the physiologist Dr. Veronique Billat for help preparing for one-hour cycling, a type of event in which you try to achieve the longest possible distance in one hour.
Ballat knew that after middle age, the body’s ability to send oxygen to the muscles was diminished. However, she theorized that intense exercise could increase this fading ability in older people. However, Marchand was the extreme.
Good Genes, Good Diet, Healthy Living
According to a New York Times article, Marchand owes his good health to strong social ties and a simple diet of yogurt, cheese, chicken, soup, and the occasional glass of wine. He has also never smoked, and kept fit and healthy in his early life.
Marchand also has a unique genetic makeup that allows him to live longer than the average person. He keeps his mind sharp by avoiding TV and reading books instead.
Healthy Aging for the Rest of Us
While the fountain of youth remains a myth, the only secret to aging healthfully and gracefully is making informed choices in all stages of life.
- For example, this trend of intermittent fasting may have anti-aging benefits.
- If you’re concerned about not only feeling young, but looking young, give fuller earth a try- it’s a natural, ancient skin treatment.
Of course, both natural and conventional medicine are always making big strides toward a future with easier aging. Check out this research article about an enzyme that could hold the key to aging!
