In a world revolving around convenience and affordability, why you should step away from mainstream, less expensive body products?

For starters, retail stores oftentimes use manipulative practices and sly marketing tactics as a means of tricking consumers into buying products that are unhealthy and contain dangerous chemicals and unnecessary additives. Greed causes a lack of foresight in gigantic entities. Profits become more important than selling products that are health conscious, and the result is a multitude of items on shelves that are unsafe for immediate and long-term health.

Fortunately, there are ways around this. You’ll save money in the long run and when you decide to make your own body care products. In this article, we’ll focus on shaving cream.

Why Give Up Mainstream, Mass-Produced Shaving Cream?

Sure, mainstream shaving cream has some additives and less-than-ideal chemicals, but it can’t possibly be that bad, right? Wrong.

Many brands of shaving cream contain cancer causing chemicals, such as petroleum byproducts, unnatural foaming agents, and even ingredients found in antifreeze. Rather than exposing your skin to harsh chemicals, simply make your own shaving cream by following this recipe inspired by a blog post on Mommypotamus.

What You’ll Need

  • Pan or small pot (try to use one that is not coated or eco-friendly coated; I used a ceramic coated pan)
  • Medium-sized mixing bowl
  • Electric kitchen mixer
  • Whisk
  • Spatula

The following ingredients:

  • ⅓ cup coconut oil
  • ⅓ cup shea butter
  • A few drops of jojoba oil
  • 2 tablespoons castile soap (I used Dr. Bronner’s hemp almond)

Making Your Shaving Cream

The first step is to add the coconut oil and shea butter into a pan over low heat. Make sure you’re patient! Let the two fully melt and combine by stirring lightly with a whisk. I bought my coconut oil and shea butter at a local Co-op and it was surprisingly not too expensive. The large container of coconut oil was about $15, and the shea butter was about $8, which is similar to the price per ounce online. While that might seem like a steep initial cost, it’s worth noting that I use coconut oil for basically all of my stovetop cooking and use shea butter for skin care. This recipe also only took a small portion of the containers.

Once the oil is fully melted, like the picture below, add a few drops of jojoba oil. I found mine at a discount grocery store for a very affordable price.

The next step is to pour the combined ingredients into a mixing bowl.

Put it in the fridge for about a half an hour, until it’s mostly solidified.

After the contents of the bowl are solid and cold, start mixing with an electric handheld mixer for 3-4 minutes, until stiff peaks start to form (just like when making whipped cream). Then add in the castile soap and stir for another minute or so, until completely incorporated.

Finally, store your shaving cream in an airtight container. Try to repurpose something if possible. I used an empty shaving cream container that I saved for this very occasion.

The best part about this coconut shaving cream is that it only takes a small dab to shave your entire face or pair of legs. Fortunately, I needed a shave the same day I made this, so I was able to test it out immediately. This is how much I used to shave my entire face:

After just one shave with this alternative shaving cream, I’m convinced I’ll never go back to mainstream shaving products. The difference was so substantial! My face felt incredible all day, and I had no razor burn, though typically have some little bumps on my face after shaving.

Additional Notes and Tips:

-This shaving cream doesn’t lather the same way as other types of shaving cream do; it’s a bit more oily and dense.

-Using a shaving brush creates a more foamy texture whether you’re shaving your face, legs, or whatever!

-There are no preservatives in this shaving product, so make sure that you are storing it in a cool location in an airtight container.

-Avoid letting water into the container as it makes the shaving cream go bad much more quickly.

-Always keep your razor as clean as possible.

-Shave during or after showering to allow your pores to open up more.

-Consider using a straight razor if possible to avoid waste and save money in the long run.
