Aromatherapy has long been used as a way to relax the mind and the spirit. However, recent research suggests that the use of different scents may actually be able to have a physiological impact on the body, and can help to relieve headache pains, sleepiness and symptoms brought on by stress.

The Amazing Health Benefits of the 5 Most Popular Aromas

Vanilla is a pretty common scent that can be found in many air fresheners, sprays and perfumes. However, it isn’t just easy on the nose; recent evidence has suggested that vanilla can have effects on the body’s physiological response to stress. In other words, the scent of vanilla helps people to relax. A study carried out at the Columbia University’s Medical Center found that subjects who smelled vanilla while contemplating stress-inducing ideas were able to maintain more stable heart rates and blood pressure.

How To Use:

  1. Add a few drops of vanilla extract to your diffuser at home
  2. Add vanilla to your unscented creams or lotions, to maintain a faint scent of comfort all day long.
  3. Put a few drops of vanilla in a handkerchief, and carry it around with you to smell throughout the day.

Green Apple

The smell of green apples has been found to reduce the length and severity of migraine headache pains. According to Dr. Alan Hirsch, MD, neurologist at the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, the scent may even be able to have a similar effect on joint pain. Recent research has suggested that green apple scent may help to reduce muscle contractions, which are the main source of migraine pain. Hirsch believes it stands to reason that it may be able to help reduce muscle contractions elsewhere in the body.

How To Use:

  1. Eat a green apple for a snack
  2. Bathe with green apple bath salts

How To Use:

  2. Add a few drops to skin cream for a refreshing coolness on the face

Citrus essential oils like lemon, orange and grapefruit is an extremely refreshing scent that helps you feel more alert and awake. Dr Hirsch explains that the smell of citrus “acts as mild irritants and the effect is similar to that of smelling salts”. This means therefore, that the scent can act as a stimulant for the mind.

How To Use:

  1. Sprinkle a few drops on a candle or a diffuser
  2. Eat a citrus fruit, or add to your morning juice or smoothie
