Venice, move over. There’s a more romantic honeymoon spot now. The northern lights or Aurora Borealis is a sight to behold. Occurring mostly in the regions of high latitude there aren’t many places to truly see their wonder. Watching an aurora gives you a feeling of being in another world, a magical universe. Some places have more powerfully enchanting occurrences of the aurora compared to others. Now you can watch the northern lights from a glass igloo. Amazing!
Some of the best places to see it are Alaska, the U.S (some parts), Northern Canada, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden.
Well, of all those places Finland is certainly taking advantage of this beautiful phenomenon. The Lapland is Finland’s northernmost region, known for its winter wonderland subarctic charm, the Midnight Sun and the Northern lights phenomena.
Deep within the Lapland on the shores of Lake Ranuanjärvi is the Arctic Fox Igloos, a luxury resort that offers guests “unobstructed view to the far-reaching open lake, and the northern skies, where the Northern Lights usually appear”, according to the resort’s website. The Lapland is one part of Finland where you could freeze to the bone in two hours during the winter, but the dome-shaped glass igloos are built with heated glass walls for insulation.
Each glass igloo is built with a glass-covered sleeping area and a timber box attached to the back for privacy. Each structure features a bedroom for two in the glass dome, a small kitchenette, a bathroom, and a lovely sauna.

A night in these glass igloos costs 369€ ($410 USD) for one and 504€ ($560) for two during the winter. The rates are significantly lower during the summer, costing only 150€ ($167) for two from June to August. They peak again during autumn and spring, tagged at 307€ ($341) for one and 419€ ($466) for two. Additional charges are incurred if guests require an extra bed.
This is one place to unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The peaceful, calming environment alone is life-giving. Then there’s the aurora. The aurora is everything and then more. There’s no better form of visual therapy than looking up at a magnificent, greenish-red display of natural lights in a snow-covered, peaceful woodland.
Other activities
Aurora-gazing is not the only thing to do at Arctic Fox Igloos. The management offers a ton of other entertaining activities in the area. If you visit during the winter, you could have so much fun riding the snow hills on snowmobiles, huskies, and reindeer. Tour the safaris on the incredible Finn horses. When the winter is at its fiercest, enjoy a daring snowshoe safari in the Ranua province of the Lapland.
During the warmer months, you could get to have a “meet and greet” with polar bears and wolfdogs in Susimaa (Wolfdogland). Row across the Lake Ranuanjärvi in a local canoe and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to meet one of the arctic foxes after whom the resort is named.
