While researching the pathogenesis of disease and illness as a biochemist in Germany, Dr. Budwig observed that quark (a soft fresh cheese) contained the very same sulphydryl groups found in cancer treatment drugs. These sulphydryl groups are cysteine and methionineamino acids. This discovery led her to create what’s now known as the Budwig diet, but is there really enough scientific evidence that it can help cancer patients?
What Is The Budwig Diet?
Dr. Budwig advised specific recommendations to follow her “anti-cancer diet”.1 Budwig claimed that her cancer patients had improved oxygen supply to their cells and found relief from all forms of cancer including cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, brain, breast, and skin cancers.1,2,5,6The following is a list of guidelines for using her protocol:
- Drink only purified water
- Receive adequate amounts of sunshine to stimulate healing in the mind and body
- Eliminate all processed foods from your diet
- Do not consume sugar, meat, or animal fat
- Prepare only fresh and organic fruits and vegetables
- Prepare and eat foods immediately, never use leftovers
- Avoid all drugs and supplements
- Always grind flaxseeds fresh and consume within 15 minutes of grinding
- Mix quark or cottage cheese and flaxseed oil in a 2:1 ratio and blend until no visible oil remains floating
- Do not mix in added ingredients until final cheese mixture results
Further Recommendations for the Budwig Diet
If suffering from cancer, Dr. Budwig recommended consuming up to 8 tablespoons of flaxseed oil (in the mixture) daily. Otherwise, 1 tablespoon per day of flaxseed oil can be taken to prevent cancer.1
The pathogenesis of cancer can be stimulated by toxins in our environment and all sources of these toxins should be eliminated. This includes trans fats, genetically modified foods, and carcinogen-ridden cooking tools such as Teflon coated pans and plastic.6

Does The Budwig Diet Actually Work?
Many elements of the Budwig diet are certainly a part of a healthy lifestyle that will naturally help your body prevent cancer. Avoiding sugar, pesticides in foods, and over processed foods is proven to help lower your risk of cancer, and should be part of everybody’s regular lifestyle. However, the

Furthermore, Budwig’s recommendations to remove yourself from supplements and medications is dangerous and unwise, especially since there’s no evidence that the key aspects of the diet can actually treat cancer. If you’re concerned that any supplements or medications you’re taking is not a good fit for you, you should speak with your medical care provider to find a better and more holistic solution.
Eating flaxseed can also result in unwanted side effects like diarrhea, and is not recommended for people with IBS, diabetes, or bleeding disorders. (8)
The bottom line is this: Research proves that replacing sugary, processed, pesticide-filled foods with natural and whole ingredients (including flaxseed) is a fantastic way to help ward off cancer. After all, diet is the largest non-genetic factor for getting cancer. But there are much better ways to help your body fight cancer cells than the Budwig protocol.
