Ugh! Cellulite!

Whether you are super slim, or bodacious curvy anyone can get it! I am talking about that cottage cheese area on the back of our bums, thighs and hips. Pesky cellulite! This is such a common concern for so many ladies.

What is Cellulite?

To understand cellulite, we must first look at the skin. The epidermis is the most outside layer, followed by the dermis. Under both of these layers are fat compartments. Thick collagen fibers separate each fat compartment.

When you have no cellulite, fat cells are not full, and the skin has a smooth flat appearance.  Whereas when you have cellulite, those fat compartments, and fat cells are STUFFED! They begin to pucker into one another. It creates a dimpled orange-peel look under the skin. So, the appearance of cellulite is due to structural changes underneath the skin. Further, since we’re born with a set number of fat cells, our genetics determines where they are located.

Although both women and men can have cellulite, here are some reasons why we often see it on women:

  • Women usually have higher body fat percentages.
  • Women have thinner skin with smaller fat compartments.
  • Women’s hormones such as estrogen and progesterone also play a role. Estrogen induces the formation of fat which helps with menses and pregnancy.  When a woman is pregnant, estrogen causes the collagen fibers to breakdown. This helps relax the cervix to prepare for the delivery.

What Are Some Common Causes of Cellulite?

Pregnancy due to the hormonal changes mentioned above.

Aging lowers your energy requirements, or in other words, the amount of food energy needed to balance energy expenditure to maintain body size, body composition. This can result in higher fat stores especially if your intake is higher than what your body sufficiently needs.

Being overweight results in excess fat deposited into fat compartments. This enhances the appearance of cellulite.

Poor circulation causes collagen fibers not to receive enough blood. Blood carries oxygen, healthy nutrients, and rids all cells in the body of toxic wastes.  Without proper blood flow, the fibers shrink, thicken and leave a bumpy appearance.

Lack of activity means you are living a sedentary lifestyle. This leads to poor circulation and less blood getting to the fibers, tissues, vessels and organs of the body.

So…….what are we to do with this pesky cellulite issues?

5 Action Steps To Get Rid Of Cellulite

1. Eat well!

When you eat your three meals a day, with loads of green vegetables. This will keep your calorie intake low, and give you loads of fiber. Further, no more packaged and processed foods! These have both high sugar and salt which both make cellulite look worse.

2. Exercise! Exercise! Exercise!

30 minutes, 5 times a week at a minimum of both weight resistance exercises and aerobics. The aerobic activity keeps your energy output high, so you will be expending more than you are taking in, thus resulting in less fat being stored.  The weight training will tone the muscles.

If that muscle is weak and flaccid, the fat appears more dimpled sitting on top of the muscle.  Exercise also results in lower subcutaneous fat storage. Exercise increases blood flow to the tissue helping to keep those connective tissues healthy and strong.

3. Drink Lots of Water!

Water helps with detoxification,  flushing toxins out of the body and enhancing lymphatic flow. Getting rid of toxins is crucial.

4. Dry Skin Brushing!

It improves blood flow since it helps the lymphatic system work more effectively. It helps to remove toxins which damage connective tissues. Further, it may soften hard fat deposits under the skin, diminishing the look of cellulite.

5. Massage!

If you can’t afford one, do it yourself. Massages increase blood flow to the area. Although it does not reduce cellulite, it brings new blood flow, removes toxins in the area and improves the appearance of the dimpling. Giving yourself a leg massage after stepping out of the shower works wonders and feels great! I like using coconut oil; it hydrates and has a smooth gliding effect on the skin.
