Cherry Juice and Sleep

Research has shown that drinking cherry juice is an effective way to increase the amount of sleep that you get. According to a new study conducted by researchers from the Louisiana State University, drinking a cup of tart cherry juice twice a day could help people get an extra hour and a half of sleep every night.

During the study, seven individuals who were experiencing sleeping problems each completed two different “treatment” periods that lasted for two weeks and were each two weeks apart. During one of the treatment periods, participants were told to drink eight ounces (around one cup) of tart cherry juice twice a day. During the other treatment period, they were told to do the same thing but with a placebo juice instead.

During the time that they were sleeping, study participants had their sleep stages and the transitions between these stages evaluated. They also completed a variety of questionnaires related to anxiety, depression and fatigue (many symptoms associated with sleep deprivation).

Researchers found that, while drinking tart cherry juice, the study participants slept, on average, an extra 90 minutes compared to when they were given the placebo. This led researchers to come to the conclusion that drinking two cups of cherry juice a day increased sleep time by approximately an hour and a half.

The reason that tart cherries may be an effective sleep aid is due to the fact that they naturally produce melatonin, the sleep-wake cycle hormone.
