Some cough medicines taste okay, but this story will leave a bad taste in your mouth.

In 2010 poor production procedures lead to McNeil, a branch of Johnson & Johnson, pulling children’s and infant’s liquid Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec, and Benadryl. The company called the probability of harm “remote,” right before recalling about 50 different products made in one Fort Washington, Pa. plant.

Recalled products were distributed in the U.S., Canada, Dominican Republic, Dubai (UAE), Fiji, Guam, Guatemala, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, and Kuwait. Parents were issued to not give their children adult formulas of the same medicine, but instead buy other brands.

So what was wrong with these products that are supposed to improve our health?

“Some of the products included in the recall may contain a higher concentration of active ingredient than is specified; others may contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements; and others may contain tiny particles,” a company news release state

Aaahh, tiny particles. I’ve heard a spoonful of sugar can help the medicine go down, but I have never heard that adding tiny bits of metal to the syrup we lovingly give our children helps. In March 2015 McNeil plead guilty to a federal criminal charge. In 2009 a complaint was made after a  consumer found black specks in a bottle of children’s Tylenol.

McNeil found traces of metal (nickel, iron, and chromium) in their products coming off the line. But they just kept on making the products. In 2010 they got a taste of their own medicine, when the recall happened, and now, five years later, they are owning up to the fact. Big Pharma was thinking with their wallet, and not for our best interests.

It is so much better to have control over what we put in our bodies. Especially what we are giving to our kids. When your kids are sick, give them time to rest. Sleep, sleep, and more sleep, as well as staying hydrated and eating healthy. It’s hard when your child gets sick, but there’s always something that can be done.

We just don’t want our “medicine” making our kids even more sick, that’s all.
