When someone thinks of dessert, the first thought their mind usually goes to is cake. And there is nothing more popular than chocolate cake. The recipe has practically stayed the same for years, but I’m here to tell you something that might blow your mind.

You can now make an egg-free and butter-free chocolate cake. So what goes in its place? Avocado! I didn’t believe it at first either, but after trying this recipe I couldn’t even tell the difference. Who knew vegan cake could be so delicious! Try it for yourself.

Chocolate Cake Made with Avocado

What you need


  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 5 tbsp. chocolate cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. kosher salt
  • ¼ cup coconut or avocado oil
  • 1 avocado, mashed until smooth
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 tbsp. white vinegar
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 cups raw cane or coconut sugar (optional: use less for less sweetness)


  • 2 avocados, mashed
  • 2 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 5 tbsp. chocolate cocoa powder

What to do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Grease and flour two 9” cake pans
  3. In a large bowl whisk: flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt for the cake mix
  4. In another bowl whisk: canola oil, coconut/avocado oil, avocado, water and white vinegar for the frosting mix. Add sugar after it’s fully mixed
  5. Pour the second mix into the first and mix until smooth
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the pans
  7. Bake for 30 minutes and check to see if it’s done
  8. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 15 minutes, then remove to cool completely
  9. Add a layer of frosting to the first cake, place the second cake on top and add the remaining frosting
  10. Serve and enjoy!

It may take some getting used to while preparing, but once you take that first bite you’ll wonder why you never thought of it earlier. Vegans and non-vegans alike will enjoy this one, so whip it up for your next get together and wait for the compliments.
