The Largest Study of Aspartame
The University of Iowa has conducted a study including 59,614 women and an analysis of their diet soda consumption over the span of 3 years. (1) The subjects were divided into four groups:
- 2+ diet drinks a day,
- 5-7 diet drinks per week,
- 1-4 diet drinks per week,
- 0-3 diet drinks per month.
“This is one of the largest studies on this topic, and our findings are consistent with some previous data…” says Dr.Ankur Vyas, the lead investigator of the study. (4)

The percentage of heart attacks, ischemic stroke, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, cardiovascular death varied in among the four categories:
- 2+ diet drinks a day – 8.5%
- 5-7 diet drinks per week – 6.9%
- 1-4 diet drinks per week – 6.8%
- 0-3 diet drinks per month – 7.2% (5)
