If you have to drive with your head out of the window, then this make-it-yourself car air freshener is exactly what you need.

This aroma therapy is cheaper and a lot healthier for you than those pine tree, chemically scented, air fresheners, which only disrupt your sense of smell so you don’t smell anything.

They emit toxic gas, such as methoxychlor, that coats your nasal passage. Sometimes it’s even strong enough to cut out your olfactory nerves altogether.

That’s not something anyone should be sniffing.

The first step to a safe and natural air freshener is:

Get a Tea Infuser


If you’re like me, you probably have a ball tea infuser sitting in your kitchen already. Perfect!

You can get really creative with it and buy different shapes or sizes of tea infuser. Get the kids to pick out one!

Now that you have something cute to hold the scent in, you’ll need some flowers to kick the bad odors out the door.

You have a couple of options with this one. You can either

The sun and heat in your car will dry them out really quickly and leave behind a long-lasting fresh scent.

B – Crush The Leaves

By crushing the leaves of the plants, you activate the release of scents. Sprinkle a little bit of the crushed leaves into your tea infuser and you can now hang your air freshener from your rearview mirror. Be careful though, this looks so cute in your window other drivers will be craning their neck to peek at your creation.

You can add any smells you enjoy to the tea infuser, but here are a few combinations to get you started. Hint: Add a drop or 2 of your favorite essential oil to strengthen the aroma and keep the scent lasting longer.



Crush both the flower and leaves of the lavender and put into your infuser. This makes a pretty purple air freshener and keeps you calm and relaxed through those long commutes home.


For that minty-fresh air! This plant has a cooling effect that is great for a hot summer’s day.

Rosemary Leaves

These leaves are much more fresh (and natural) than any store-bought air freshener.

Rosemary, Cloves, and Cinnamon Sticks


This one is great for the holidays! A wonderful scent of cinnamon will definitely put you in a joyful mood.

Sage and Citrus

Mix together sage leaves with lemon or orange peels for a clean smell. Citrus scents have also been proven to relieve stress and combat depression, so this one is sure to keep your moods bright and cheery.
