We’ve all heard stories about dogs changing the lives of their owners, but the stories are generally based around the emotional and mental impact (happiness, anxiety, stress) that a dog has on a human’s life… but what if there’s more to it?
Studies have recently shown a correlation between not only dogs and mental health, but also the effects dogs may have on our physical health; more specifically our immune system!
How Dogs Improve Human Health
Allergy Helpers – The bacteria found on dogs may encourage the human body to grow beneficial microorganisms that protect them from sneezing, itching and hives caused by allergies.
Germ Sharing – Homes that house a pet dog are always higher in bacteria density, and thus there is always a higher risk that you will come in contact with the germs and bacteria. This exposure to bacteria is actually strengthening our immune systems and making us immune to microbes that others (without a dog) might be susceptible to.

Studies have shown that babies who were born into a house with a dog proved to have less ear infection and were less susceptible to allergies and asthma later in life.
Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean you should stop washing your hands after coming in contact with your dog, it simply means that the uncontrollable exposure to your dog’s germs, bacteria and microbes is in fact good for you!
