How much do you rely on technology? Would you be able to navigate around a traffic jam without a navigation app?
Technology isn’t always reliable, this story reminds us, as nearly 100 people in Colorado followed a Google Maps route to detour around a collision on the Peña Boulevard, a road leading to Denver International Airport.
This alternate route was too good to be true, as it took drivers down a dirt road that turned into a muddy mess. Plenty of vehicles couldn’t make it through and became trapped in the mud.
Google stated that this road was not marked as private. Google states that they take many factors into account when determining driving routes, including the size of the road and directness of the route. They also work to provide the best directions, however, issues can arise due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather. Google encourages drivers to follow local laws, stay attentive and use the best judgment while driving.
Connie Monsees was one of the people that followed the alternate route, she was on her way to pick up her husband from the airport when she encountered serious congestion on the Peña Boulevard.
She told CNN that she followed the detour because Google estimated it would be half the time. “There were a bunch of other cars going down the dirt road too, so I said, ‘I guess it’s OK.’ It was not OK.”
Luckily, Connie’s’ car had all-wheel drive, so she was able to get through the sticky situation. She even gave two people a ride to the airport, and they were able to catch their flights.
Technology may be the future, but it also wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep a paper map on hand, for those unforeseen circumstances.
Without technology – would you know how to get around?
