The next time someone says something that ‘pushes your buttons,’ consider this: your pain body was just activated.
We all have a pain body. Just like our physical bodies store our legs and noses and stuff, our pain bodies host emotional trauma deposited by life experience.
Like a flourishing savings account, the energy body gets fuller and fuller leaving us physically stuck (even in chronic pain), lacking in vigor and emotionally shut down. Along with closed off-ness, this accumulating negativity results in fearfulness, resentment, anger, jealousy, judgment, envy and a host of self limiting beliefs.
And unless you acknowledge this, and take measures to ‘dissolve’ past emotional trauma, your pain body will bite you on the ass – again and again.
Energy healing acknowledges that we have a pain body. It might not be the best way to address it for you. But it is a way. Men in particular may benefit from being open to this kind of healing (bold statement that I will qualify below).
This post is intended as a primer on the energy body, and how you might go about freeing yourself from emotional distress states such as anxiety, anger and depression, and physical pain.
What Is Energy Healing?
It’s an umbrella term for any therapy that manipulates the energy circuits in our bodies to facilitate our innate healing mechanisms.
Energy healing techniques are ‘hands-off,’ and involve a transfer of ‘healing energy’ from the practitioner to you. That in itself makes it esoteric. There are many types. More common ones are reiki, reflexology, kinesiology, thought field therapy and acupuncture.
There is a little science here and there on the efficacy of various techniques.
Energy Body and Pain Body
You have an energy anatomy as well as a physical one. No, you can’t see it. Deal with it. You can’t see love either, but you know it exists. The energy body is located around and permeates through the physical body.
Joy, bliss, ecstasy, wonder and awe; those are the kind of feelings that come from a healthy, free-flowing energy body. On the other hand, an unhealthy energy body (or ‘pain body’) can create negative emotions like fear and anxiety. This is stuck emotional energy.
Best-selling author and spiritualist Eckhart Tolle defined a pain body as the collective manifestation of all the pain and sorrow a person has ever gone through their entire life – and all the things they inherited from their culture and family history, too. That’s a whole lot of misery to potentially contend with.
How To Dissolve Your Pain Body
The pain body wants to survive, just like every other entity in existence. Tolle suggests that when someone is trying to pick a fight with you, it’s simply their pain body trying to feed. Nice little analogy for you.

How About a Chakra?
Literally translates as ‘wheel.’ This is a central point of energy (think of them like ‘whirlpools’).

Having an understanding of chakras isn’t necessary, but might help you to get a handle on ‘pain body management.’
The seven energy centers are:
Root Chakra – Located at the base of spine. Associated with survival issues such as financial independence, money and food.
Sacral Chakra – Located at your lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel and two inches in. Associated with a sense of abundance, well-being, pleasure and sexuality.
Solar Plexus Chakra — Located at your upper abdomen in the stomach area. Associations are self-worth, self-confidence and self-esteem.
Heart Chakra — Located at the center of your chest just above the heart. Associated with love, joy and inner peace.
Throat Chakra — Located (surprisingly) at your throat. Affects communication, self-expression of feelings and the truth.
Third Eye Chakra — Located at the forehead between the eyes (also called the brow chakra). Associated with intuition, imagination, wisdom and the ability to think and make decisions.
Crown Chakra —Located at the very top of the head. Affects inner and outer beauty, our connection to spirituality and pure bliss.

What Your Aches and Pains Might Mean
Emotional stress can cause physical complaints as well as emotional blockages.
Consider that your physical pain is an indicator that there is emotional work to be done, and unresolved trauma in the nervous system. Louise Hay has written a great book on this subject.

Why Bros Should Definitely Deal With It
For the simple reason that cultural and societal norms have instilled in our men the propensity not to talk their stuff through.
It’s this reticence in seeking emotional support that is attributed to mens’ lower life expectancy. A recent study showing the health benefits of bromances illustrates the point nicely. Longevity is directly connected to our mental health. The stats speak for themselves: men are 40% more likely to die from cancer, 70% more likely to die from heart disease, and live an average of nine years of their lives with chronic health concerns.
So guys, if you want to live long and well, then you are going to have to learn to talk.
My Personal Choice of Pain Body Management
I have yet to experiment with energy healing (doesn’t mean I won’t).
For me the most powerful thing has been chiropractor, author and researcher Dr Joe Dispenza’s teachings. His method isn’t energy healing – you become your own practitioner.
We all need to deal with unattended to emotional trauma if we want to thrive emotionally and physically. It doesn’t have to be through energy healing – but why not?
The thing to appreciate about energy healing is that you have to meet your healer half way (you need to ‘bring it’ – aka – yourself ‘to the table’, so to speak). In that way it can be said that healers are almost acting like a placebo.
