Summer is rapidly approaching—it’s time for amusement parks, sorbet, long nights with friends, swimming, gardening, beach time, and so much more. Keeping your body safe and protected during these warm-weather months is essential. With this in mind, it’s time to take inventory on your essential oils supply and see what you need for summer!

Essential oils can make your summer fun and wild, in the best kind of way. Don’t worry about bug bites, sunburn, or poison ivy anymore with these essential oils for your skin and health!

Bug Bite Relief with Peppermint

Peppermint is an excellent-smelling essential oil that can help with migraines, sore muscles, and digestion. It’s also a very effective itch reliever for your bug bites. Your local store should have small, dark blue glass spray bottles that you can mix essential oils in.

In the bottle, just combine 15 drops of peppermint for every ounce of water that you have. Shake well before use. You can also use lemongrass essential oil and lavender essential oil if you don’t have peppermint on hand for your bug bites!

Prevent Bug Bites with This Blend!

Stop those crazy bugs in their tracks. Bugs tend to shy away from people who are sprayed with a gorgeous essential oil blend. They recognize that these people are wise enough to not use weird chemicals such as octocrylene (which can cause skin reactions), and oxybenzone (which has an estrogen-like effect on the body) on their bodies when it comes to repelling insects. The bugs are intimidated by their wisdom and avoid these people in order not to feel dumb.

I don’t blame them. Imagine going up to someone— “Oh hello, ma’am, good day. I’d really love to take a sample of your (smells essential oil blend)—oh. I’m so sorry. I did not realize. Pardon me, madam.” Then you’d have to buzz away from this wise, celestial creature like the bloodsucker you really are. No score there, buddy.

Want to get this royal treatment from bugs? Whip up this blend in your little mister bottle:

  • 25 drops lavender
  • 25 drops peppermint
  • 25 drops eucalyptus
  • 25 drops geranium

Carry this little bottle with you everywhere this summer to repel bugs in a pinch!

Cure Poison Ivy and Soothe Itching with These Oils

If you find with dismay that you’re covered in poison ivy, what’s the first thing you do? Freak out, of course.

Don’t freak out! All you have to do is get some essential oils and apply them to the affected areas. Any of these can help to effectively cure poison ivy: peppermint, lavender, tea tree oil, eucalyptus, myrrh, and cypress essential oils.

You can also use peppermint essential oil to soothe the itching of the poison ivy!

Soothe Sunburn with Lavender and Peppermint

Using essential oils for your sunburn can help to both calm and heal your burned skin. While sunlight is important, especially for helping the body to make vitamin D, too much sun can be poisonous to your body. Just remember that there can always be too much of a good thing!

Using lavender and peppermint is about as easy as it gets when using essential oils. For a lavender mist, it’s important to be sure you’re using a pure lavender essential oil, not one that contains lavendin, which is not the same thing. Lavendin can actually make your sunburn worse, so check the label before using the oil on your irritated skin!

Lavender Spray for Sunburn

Using a 2-ounce mister bottle, you can combine the following ingredients to get relief from your sunburn:

  • 20-30 drops lavender oil
  • Fill half the bottle with pure aloe vera gel (you can use straight from the plant if you have one!)
  • Fill the rest of the bottle with purified water

Directions: Spray on affected skin area every 15 minutes. When your sunburn begins to feel better, stop applying.

Peppermint Spray for Sunburn Relief

Peppermint can provide instant relief for your sunburn! You’ll love this peppermint cooler adopted from here.

  • 10 drops lavender (for every ounce of water)
  • 5 drops of peppermint (for every ounce of water)
  • Fill rest of the bottle with pure aloe vera gel or purified water.

Directions: Just spray on your sunburned skin for relief!

Protect yourself this summer with some basic essential oils! They’re budget friendly, chemical-free, and very effective for all types of summer ailments. Your supermarket may carry essential oils, or choose to browse your local store. Many places even have certain kinds of essential oils on sale, so take advantage of all the season has to offer with these essential oils!
