Hopseed is considered by many to be just an annoying weed, but the truth is that it actually may be far more valuable then people think. New research has revealed that the leaves of a hopseed plant may be extremely potent in removing or preventing the Candida infection.
Candida is a genus of yeast that is the most common cause of fungal infections for humans in the world. Candida albicans is the most common species of this genus, and is typically found in the gut. People who are immunocompromised, that is to say, people with HIV are at risk of having these bacteria enter their bloodstream, which happens to over 90,000 people a year in the United States. Most candida infections occur in the oral cavity, the esophagus or the vagina, and are extremely uncomfortable for the person afflicted with it.
Candida albicans grow in a process called ‘germ tubes’, or hyphal. These tublular channels reach out into the environment around them as their cells expand, which is how the infection spreads. It’s extremely difficult to stop the germ growth once it begins, which means that it’s hard to stop these infections with traditional medicine.
Enter Hopseed Leaves
Researchers found that all three concentration levels of hopseed leaf extract that they used worked to drastically inhibit the growth of the candida yeast infection. By blocking the infection’s ability to produce germ tubes, the hopseed blocked the tube growth by as much as 85%.
An Effective Cure
The research on candida was conducted by South Africa’s University of Witwatersrandm, by a team of researchers who collected candida albicans culture from the mouths of multiple HIV infected persons. The samples were then cultured in a lab using agar dextrose, because candida feeds off of sugars.
To combat these cultured samples of candida. The researchers applied the extract of freshly ground hopseed plants in three different concentrations, and sat back to examine the growth of the cultures with the hopseed as an obstructive. The results were better then expected.
Other Candida Remedies
Hopweed isn’t the only herb that’s proven to be an effective treatment for candida. Here are some other notable cures:
- Baicalein: a flavone found in Baikal Skullcap roots
- Cassia Spectabilis (commonly known as Gold Tree)
- Houttuynia Cordata (Chameleon)
- Prunus Pendula (weeping cherry tree)
- Cortex mountan (paeonia suffruticosa)
- Cortex pseudolaricis (pseudolaricis kaempfri)
- Rhizoma alpiniae officinarum (Alpinia officinarum)
- Rhizoma coptidis (Coptis chinensis – Gold thread)
- Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum)
- Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum)
When combating a yeast infection like candida, herbal remedies are by far the best way to go. However, none of the listed herbs above are able to fight candida half as well as the hopseed leaf extracts have been able to. These herbs help to inhibit the infection, but they aren’t able to cut off the candida germ tubes.
As with many natural illnesses, there is usually a cure to be found in nature. In the case of candida, the natural treatment is the leaves of hopseed.
