Fruit juice is not a real serving of fruit. It’s just not.

For years the USDA has told us that fruit juice counts as a serving of fruit, even though they are not even close to a nutritional equivalent. Fruit cocktails are obviously almost entirely comprised of sugar, food coloring and other additives, but even 100% fruit juice isn’t a lot better. There’s a big difference between eating an orange and drinking a glass of orange juice.


Why 100% Juice is Not 100% Fruit

Even when juice is made with 100% fruit, it isn’t made with 100% of the fruit. That is, it’s made of mostly the juice, which is basically sugar water, and leaves out all the good stuff. Plus the juice goes through a number of processes and is pasteurized, which kills bacteria but also destroys nutrients.

Not Even Close to 100% of the Benefits

Most of the nutrients are stored in the peel, pulp, fiber, and flesh of the fruit – basically everything that gets left out of the juice. If you really want the health benefits of eating apples or oranges or bananas, you’re not going to get them from drinking a glass of apple juice. In fact, if you’re not careful about reading the label you might end up drinking the juice of another fruit altogether.

Make Your Own Juice


Luckily, this doesn’t mean you have to give up your morning glass of OJ. You just might need to put a little more effort in.

Freshly squeezing the juice yourself ensures that it is hasn’t been processed, or pasteurized and should taste amazing. But an even better approach is to blend up the entire fruit, so that you are getting all those nutrients from the fiber and flesh.

If you really want 100% fruit juice, you have to use 100% of the fruit.
