Winter is almost here, and that means it’s time to begin stirring up the classic comfort food: soup! After all, nothing can beat a heaping bowl of soup to warm you as the temperature plunges.


It’s hard to find anyone who does not like soup since comes in countless tastes and textures to suit any preferences. A light vegetable soup is perfect for as an appetizer, a hearty stew doubles as a meal, and cool, sweet fruit soups compose a scrumptious dessert.

When you come home to a steaming pot of your favorite soup, remember that there is an even greater perk than simply warding off the cold.

Soup Promotes Weight Loss

The statistics for people who are overweight or obese are rising each year dramatically. Individuals who become a part of these rates are at risk for developing chronic diseases and are at a higher risk of mortality. Dietary factors such as a higher intake of dietary fiber, decreased consumption of trans and saturated fats, and reduced sugar consumption have shown to prevent these health risks, but now science is finding an additional approach to shed the pounds.

Recent studies have proved that soup in forms such as broth, puree, or chunky, can reduce appetite and caloric intake. After all, soup is base on liquid that helps you feel full with consuming fewer calories, is high in fiber which helps digestion and can have lean meats or beans with protein that can keep you satisfied for a long period.

Studies on the Japanese and European population consistently reported that eating soup on a regular basis is associated with a reduced risk of being overweight and obesity. Through global research, it was shown that increased soup consumption aided weight loss and regulation.


However, in the USA, 60% of adults have soup less than four times a month in the winter. During the other seasons, the stats increase to 80%.

One particular study conducted a 10-week behavioral program for weight loss and discovered the participants who had soup four or more times a week had lost 20.4% of their excessive weight, in contrast to those who ate it less than four times weekly who had lost only 14.7% of their excess weight.

Another study tested the effects of soup consumption with a traditional weight loss program. The researchers found that the average amount of soup eaten in a day correlated with the participants’ weight loss. Additionally, the soup-consuming participants maintained their weight better than the traditional group by the follow-up 52 weeks later.

Now that we are craving this delicious, healthy food, remember to be mindful of what is in your bowl. For example, if you order a butternut squash carrot soup from a restaurant, you are not getting a bowl of nutritious vegetables.

The base of the soup is probably cream or half and half which skyrockets the calorie count for this dish and can harm those with dairy sensitivities. You could also be consuming soup mix which can be full of chemicals like MSG and is outrageously high in sodium.
