This year, a huge step was taken in the right direction for popular chocolate brand, Hershey’s. As of 2015, Hershey’s is gradually eliminating all genetically modified ingredients from their milk chocolate bars and kisses. Welcome aboard Hershey’s, now let’s spread the news to other corporations!
Hershey GMO-Free Goals
Their previous recipe contained sugar beet sugar, which is a GM crop, while their new recipe contains cane sugar. On top of this adjustment, Hershey’s will also remove all polyglycerol polyricinoleate and artificial flavors.
GMO ingredients have been linked to decreased nutritional value in plants, increased toxicity, as well as the promotion of antibiotic resistance in humans. In past studies on animals, GMO foods have been proven to trigger gastrointestinal and immune system conditions, organ damage, accelerated aging, as well as infertility.
In addition, there has also been a staggering amount of correlation between the introduction of GMOs and the increase of chronic illness. Since GMOs have infiltrated the grocery store markets, there has been a rise in food allergies, cases of autism, digestive problems and reproductive disorders. And to think… Monsanto even has the gall to defend their products!
Now back to Hershey…
As their rebranding continues, Hershey’s goal is to stand by a “simple” recipe, however they admit that the process may take time and that it may not stretch to every product in the company.
Every company has to start somewhere and in our opinion, the intent and the transparency of Hershey is a good sign that they are trying to make changes for the better. If all goes as planned, Hershey’s will be free of GMOs, artificial coloring, artificial flavors, corn syrup, and will only contain milk that is hormone free… take that Monsanto!
