It’s not a topic that will make impressions at the dinner table, but it’s a common problem many people face in their lifetime. Fungal infections can be uncomfortable, itchy, and unsightly. If you took these rings and rashes to the doctor, they would likely prescribe some form of antimicrobial cream with a hefty price tag.
However, many minor fungal infections can easily be treated at home, without that added expense. To know how to best treat a fungal infection of the skin, you must first understand the infections themselves. These infections are often caused by microbes, some of the most common being onychomycosis, candidiasis, ringworm, jock itch, and athlete’s foot.
All of these fungi cause different infections in different areas of the body. Ringworm, jock itch, and athlete’s foot have the ability to manifest anywhere on the skin or scalp. However, candidiasis (yeast) typically manifests in the urinary tract, vagina, and the mouth. Onychomycosis manifests itself as infections of the nail and nail beds.
Of course, the severity of infection will vary from person to person. If your infection is not responding to home treatment, you will have to seek medical help for a stronger anti-microbial medicine. These home remedies are powerful and come with a price tag that won’t break the bank. Try any or a combination of these treatments at home on your fungal infection.
Need a Fungal Infection Home Remedy? Here Are Our 5 Favorites
1. Coconut Oil
In addition to being a healthy addition to your diet, coconut oil can offer effective treatment of any fungal infection. This is due to coconut oil’s content of medium-chain fatty acids which work as natural fungicides.
For skin infections, dab coconut oil onto the infected area with a q-tip and allow the oil to dry on its own. Do this two to three times daily until the infection clears up. Ensure a treatment is done right after your daily shower.
For vaginal infections, it is safe to soak a tampon in coconut oil and then insert it into the vagina and leave it for two hours. Upon removal, rinse the area with warm water. Repeat once daily until the infection clears.
2. Apple Cider Vinegar
ACV is another hard-hitting contender in the game of killing fungal infections due to its antimicrobial properties. Additionally, the slightly acidic environment it will create will help prevent the spread of infection.
Mix a tablespoon of ACV in a glass of water and drink once daily.
Additionally, dilute ACV with water in a 1:1 ratio, then apply the solution to the affected area for thirty minutes. When done, pat the area dry with a cloth or paper towel.
3. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is full of antimicrobial compounds to help kill and prevent the spreading of the fungal infection.
Dab tea tree oil onto the affected area with Q-tips several times a day, especially after a shower.
For vaginal infection, put two to three drops of tea tree oil on a tampon and insert into the vagina for two to three hours. Repeat twice daily.
4. Cranberry Juice
Cranberry is excellent for treating fungal growth within the digestive and urinary tract.
Drink a glass of unsweetened cranberry juice several times a day until the infection clears.
Alternatively, you can take cranberry in the form of dried capsules, available at most health-food stores.
The tannin’s present in green and black teas are excellent for killing fungi. Plus, it can help soothe symptoms associated with fungal infection such as swelling, burning, and irritation. Soak tea bags in warm water for ten minutes. Remove, and place them in the refrigerator to chill. Then, place chilled tea bags on the affected area. Repeat three times daily until the infection clears.
For nail bed infections and athlete’s foot, steep five black tea bags in four cups of boiling water for five minutes. Allow the water to cool, and then soak affected feet for thirty minutes. Repeat twice daily until the infection clears.
