Calling all hot dog lovers! Despite their mouthwatering taste and their convenient cooking methods, hotdogs are proving dangerous! You need to stop feeding them to your precious kids today! After finding out why, you won’t look back!
Scientists at the University of Southern California have found that children under 10 who ate more than twelve hot dogs a month are nine times more likely to suffer from the type of cancer known as leukemia. According to Christian Nordqvist, Leukemia is the cancer of the blood or bone marrow. Every year in the US, about 24, 450 people die from this disease. In fact, leukemia is the leading cause of cancer-caused deaths amongst children and is one of the most common childhood diseases. (1,4,5)
Knowing this, we need to take special care of what we feed our children, and make sure that we don’t feed them hotdogs. We can choose to serve a limited amount of hot dogs on special occasions, yet hotdogs and other processed meats are bad news. The impact of hot dog eating is greater than we would have thought possible. (3)
Not only do hot dogs increase the risk of leukemia, but researchers also find that kids who ate hotdogs even once a week had a higher risk of developing brain cancer. According to the American Brain Tumor Association, a brain tumor is the most common type of cancer for children and youth between the ages of 0 to 19. It is also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths amongst this age group. (1,2,4)
Did you know that your consumption of hot dogs can affect the health of your children? I don’t just mean by them wanting to eat hotdogs after watching you do so. According to research done by scientists in Denver, the upcoming babies of pregnant women who ate hotdogs even once a week had double the risk of suffering from brain tumors. Another group of scientists came to the same conclusion. (2)
The risk of developing brain tumors is also high in children whose fathers ate hotdogs before conception. New research is increasingly showing us how all processed meat is bad news. But what is making hot dogs so risky for kids? (1)
Most hot dogs have nitrites, which act as preservatives and give them that red color. These nitrites bind with these compounds called amines in the hotdog while we cook them, and possibly with the amines in our stomach as well. This combination creates cancer-causing N-nitroso compounds. (1)
These compounds not only increase the risk of leukemia and brain tumors amongst children, but can cause the cancer of the stomach, the esophagus, the mouth, and the bladder as well. (1)
Processed Meat is Cancer-Causing
It’s not only hot dogs that contain these harmful preservatives, but other forms of processed meat do so as well. According to the Registered Dietician Alice Bender, any meat that has been preserved (made to last longer without going bad) through smoking curing salting or adding chemicals is considered processed meat. The World Health Organization states that according to the information we have so far, processed meat causes colorectal cancer. Harmful nitrates can be present in other processed meat as well, which we want to watch out for. (3)
Nitrates don’t always have to be bad news. For example, vegetables have nitrates that don’t turn into N-nitroso compounds because of the presence of vitamin D or C. These vitamins stop the nitrates from binding to the amines, so there isn’t that risk. Hotdogs, unfortunately, don’t work this way. (1, 2)
So…..No more hotdogs?
If you still want to eat hotdogs while avoiding nitrites, there are nitrite-free hot dogs available. Since they aren’t so popular yet, your supermarket may not carry them. In such case, with your newfound information on the dangers of conventional hot dogs, you can ask your supermarket to bring in the nitrite-free ones. (1)
According to Global Healing Center, these nitrite-free hot dogs don’t have that risk for leukemia that the regular hotdogs carry. Not only has processed meat been strongly linked to cancer, hot dogs have been linked to kidney stones as well. Knowing these key facts, you may choose to keep hot dogs of any sort out of you and your children’s diets for good.(2,6)
