Don’t panic, but you’ll probably want to check the brand of hummus you have in your kitchen. For those of you who don’t know, hummus is a delicious middle eastern spread made of chick peas. Hummus itself is not “bad.” In fact, hummus is normally a very healthy addition to any diet.
But have you heard of the Sabra Hummus recall?
Sabra Dipping Co., a Virginia based food company, ordered a national recall on 30,000 cases after inspectors at the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development found Listeria, a deadly bacteria, in Sabra’s Classic Hummus.

Like other bacteria, listeria can spread on cutting boards and counter tops. What’s pretty unique about this contaminant is that, unlike most bacteria that love warm environments, listeria thrives in cooler temperatures, such as the ones that might be found in your fridge if it’s not cold enough.
Listeria symptoms in healthy individuals are mild and include:
- High fever
- Severe headaches
- Abdominal pain
However, children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are the most vulnerable to this disease. For these populations, a listeria infection can be fatal, or cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
Treatment and Prevention
To prevent listeria and other bacteria from invading your fridge, make sure to keep your fridge at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Also, make sure to keep your fridge and kitchen surfaces clean and sanitized.
If caught early, listeria can be easily treated with IV antibiotics at the hospital. Visit USA Today for more information including a full list of Sabra packages you should discard. Currently, there are no reported cases of sickness. Let’s hope it stays that way.
