Unless you frequent smaller independent grocery stores, chances are you’re buying groceries from stores such as Costco, Target, Sprouts Farmers Market, Sam’s Club, or Walmart. You may remember back in late October 2017 when Walmart and other big-name retailers were involved in a nationwide outbreak in which listeria bacteria had contaminated frozen food products. Unfortunately, no one was aware that these stores were unknowingly selling food contaminated food until some people fell sick due to the listeria bacteria. Below you can find the original list as well as current food recalls caused by listeria monocytogenes.

But Wait, Exactly What Is Listeria monocytogenes?

The bacterium Listeria monocytogenes can contaminate foods which, if ingested, can cause a serious bacterial infection called “listeriosis.” Every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), listeria monocytogenes infects about 1,600, of whom 16% actually die.[1]

Listeria monocytogenes: Most Common Symptoms of Listeriosis

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Muscle aches
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions

“People with invasive listeriosis usually report symptoms starting 1 to 4 weeks after eating food contaminated with Listeria,” according to the CDC. “[Some] people have reported symptoms starting as late as 70 days after exposure or as early as the same day of exposure.[2]

You can see why it’s so important to know about these Listeria monocytogenes outbreaks; listeriosis can sneak up on you months later. So, we’ve included the late-2017 list as well as Listeria monocytogenes-contaminated foods that have been recalled in 2018.

Although foods on the 2017 list are a few months old, people may still have frozen food items from Wal-Mart in their freezers. If they are, according to the FDA, you can return them to the store for a refund, or just get rid of them yourself.[3]

  1. Throw away the recalled product(s) in a closed plastic bag and place it in a sealed trashcan. This helps prevent people and animals from eating it.
  2. Wash your refrigerator, freezer, or any other area you stored the recalled food thoroughly with hot water and soap.
  3. Wash your hands with warm water and soap after cleaning everything up.
