In a study of 263 volunteers who had been massaged for 45 – 60 minutes, they found that blood pressure dropped by 10 mg Hg and heart rate also decreased by 10 beats per minute… and this is after one simple treatment.
In a study with 1 group undergoing massage therapy and the other group simply relaxing for the same amount of time, the people in massage therapy showed promising improvement. Their blood pressure dropped and remained lower for several days, while the group that simply relaxed has minimal changes in blood pressure.
How Does a Massage Affect Your Heart?
Cortisol, the chemical that controls your stress hormone, has been shown to diminish during and after a therapeutic massage. This doesn’t mean that your generic heart medication should be thrown out, it simply means that massages may be a way to fast track your path to a hardy heart!
Remember to continue on a diet of phytonutrient rich vegetables and plants, arginine rich pine nuts, and lean meats. The key to a healthy heart is of course a life of all-round life of moderation, healthy diet, exercise and now… massages!
It’s also worth looking into yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, and acupuncture, as these therapies have proven to provide the same decrease in blood pressure and heart rate.
