Bread, cereal, milk, and cheese — It may seem difficult to find a meal that doesn’t start the day with one of these items included—but with a little creativity, you can whip up a delicious grain and dairy-free breakfast in no time.

While grains make up a majority of many American’s diets, they’re also rife with anti-nutrients, that interfere with the absorption of other essential vitamins and minerals. Phytic acid, the outer coating found on grains (as well as legumes and nuts), binds with important minerals like calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, and zinc and inhibits their full absorption. Lectins, or plant-protecting proteins, can disrupt good gut flora and wreak havoc on the digestive system.

For those with lactose and/or casein intolerance— sugar and protein found in dairy, respectively—dairy is out of the question, and mainstream dairy has little to offer the general population compared to other sources of the same nutrients.

Luckily, it’s easy to remove grains and dairy from your diet thanks to an abundance to healthier, better-for-you options. From swapping grains with veggie solutions (or bacon “crust”) to replacing dairy with creamy almond milk, you’ll have a sustaining, nutritious breakfast idea for every day of the week.
