It seems that criminals will go to great lengths to try and get what they don’t deserve. Whether it’s stealing identities, stealing credit card information from ATMs, their creativity seems to be endless. One woman from Beaufort, North Carolina found out first hand just how far people will go to get what they want.
What To Do If You See A Child On The Road
The 33 year old Beaufort resident was driving home from work around 1:30 in the morning when she spotted what appeared to be a small child just sitting, smack dab in the middle of the road. It was dark and she couldn’t make see exactly what was sitting in the road, so she slowly approached the object with her car.
As the woman approached the object, she immediately realized that it wasn’t a child at all. It appeared to be the head of a dummy that had been attached to a body dressed in children’s clothing. Thankfully, she stayed in her car, because she soon saw that two men were approaching her vehicle wearing dark hoodies.

The men attempted to get into her car by trying the handles that happened to be locked. The woman got away as quickly as she could, and once she reached a safe distance, she notified the authorities.
Cateret County deputies showed up on the scene and were able to find the dummy easily, but there was no sign of the men that had tried to enter the woman’s vehicle. The perpetrators used a fake plastic head and children’s clothing to make it resemble a small child. In a statement, Major Jason A. Wank said that in situations like these, driving away is “absolutely the right thing to do.”
The Sheriff’s office also warned driver’s to always keep their doors locked, even while they are driving. If the woman had gotten out of the vehicle, she could have easily been the victim of a carjacking, or much worse.
Thankfully, deputies were able to find the perpetrators thanks to some tips that were given the the Sheriff’s office. The culprits turned out to be three children, aged 10, 14, and 17. One of the perpetrators told police that the whole thing was just a ‘prank’.
“Juveniles explained that they set up the dummy in hopes that someone would run it over and think they hit a real person and ‘freak out,’” Wank said.
While it isn’t clear why two of the children attempted to enter the vehicle, thankfully no one was hurt in the process. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only way that people have been trying to steal cars.
