I hate to be a Debby downer but this news comes as no surprise to me.
The newest report from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which comes out every 5 years, claims Americans are as unhealthy as ever.
Despite the growing organic and health food movements all across the country, nearly two thirds of American adults are overweight and almost half of the population has developed preventable chronic diseases as a result of poor diet and physical inactivity.
One of the biggest differences in their newest publication, is a plea by the reporting committee to the government to reconsider how the environment factors into its guidelines on what to eat.
The bulk of this report outlines what Americans should be eating but offers no tangible strategies on how to get them there.
Here are a few bulleted points which will give you a good idea of how useful this report is:
- A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat dairy, seafood, nuts and legumes.
- A diet that is moderate in alcohol.
- A diet which is low in processed and red meats and foods with sugar and refined grains.
- Really? I’m sorry, but who in their right mind doesn’t already know that sugar is bad for you?
It is not enough to simply study our habits and tell us what we should be doing, we need real results which can only come through education and implementation in social systems.
What kind of food are we offering in hospitals? In schools and the military canteens on army bases?
There is a difference between knowing and doing, so let’s enact change and demand results from our social institutions.
