If you’re looking for the adventure of a lifetime and your dream has always been to live somewhere far off the beaten path, then this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. This remote Scottish island is looking for residents to come live and work there starting in September 2020. Here’s what you need to know.

Remote Scottish Island Looking for Residents

Some 30 miles off the coast of Scotland is the Isle of Rum. This little island is part of what is known as the Archipelago, Scotland’s Inner Hebrides islands. (1)

The Isle of Rum, who’s population currently sits at just 30 to 40 people, is now accepting applicants to rent two four-bedroom eco-homes in the village of Kinloch. Currently, under construction, the homes will be move-in ready by September 2020. (1)

The Details

Renting one of these homes costs just $590 per month- a far cry from the amount it costs to live in most cities around the world. Applicants are expected to commit to staying for a minimum of two years. (1)

The Isle of Rum is a National Nature Reserve. If you choose to apply, you must like wildlife: the houses share the land with a number of local animals, including (1, 2):

  • Deer
  • Wild goats
  • Ponies
  • White- and golden-tailed eagles
  • Dolphins
  • Eider ducks

Those are just a few of the animals you will have the pleasure of encountering on a daily basis. Though English is spoken on the island, those interested in applying should be prepared to hear some Gaelic and Lallans, as well. (3) Perhaps you’ll even pick up a word or two of these ancient languages.

The Ideal Applicant

The Isle is looking for individuals and families who are ready and willing to volunteer and help to organize events. Ideally, the applicants are hard-working and either self-employed already or are wanting to become self-employed.(1) The occupations of interest are (1):

  • Food production
  • Catering
  • Tourism
  • Childcare
  • Construction

Already the island has plenty of options for tourists to come to stay, including campsites, wild camping options, bed and breakfasts, cabins, hostels, cabins, and more. (2) The new homes will be for long-term or permanent residents only.

If you would like to apply, you can read through the Prospective Residents Welcome Pack here.

The deadline to apply is Friday, August 28th, 2020. You can apply using this form.
