Many women, especially under the age of 55, have no idea what the symptoms of a heart attack feel like and this lack of understanding has lead to over 15,000 fatalities each year.
The longer someone waits to seek help, the more severe the consequences will be.
Many women have trouble spotting the signs of early heart attack because they’re not generally as one would expect them to be… as one sees in the movies for example.
The difference between men and women
Men and women are both at risk for early heart attacks and heart conditions, however it is more likely that a woman will die from the damage. This could be due to the fact that women often feel more subtle symptoms than men, such as faint nausea or arm pain. Both these symptoms could be misunderstood as symptoms for another illness, or entirely overlooked.
As well, a very frightening study showed that women often don’t bring up their concern about experiencing a heart attack for fear that someone will think they are a hypochondriac. Heart attacks in women younger than 55 are believed to be far more rare than they truly are, which is why women may be nervous to share their suspicions.
Heart disease is more common amongst men, so many of the tools used to diagnose heart conditions are not as well suited to female patients, making it more difficult for doctors to make a proper diagnosis. Sometimes women experiencing heart pain have been told they have acid reflux or gas.
Heart disease is the 3rd leading cause of death in American for women ages 35-44…which is no small matter. Heart disease in young women is not to be belittled, especially since 1 in 3 people in the United States is considered overweight.
Remember, it’s better to be safe, than sorry. Do not second guess yourself if you think you’re experiencing a heart attack – go straight to the hospital.
