All right, so before I start this article, I know a bunch of you are going to complain about going to bed after a lot of water. Yes, some of you have to get up in the night to pee. If that’s who you are, that’s fine. Take your glass of water an hour or two before bed. Stay away from tea, especially if it’s caffeinated. Don’t sacrifice a good night’s sleep for some extra hydration.

So if you are not weak or tiny of bladder or you can fall right back to sleep the second your head hits the pillow (teach me your ways), drinking water right before bed has a lot of surprising health benefits.

You know you need more water if you wake up in the morning thirsty. While a slightly dry mouth is fairly normal (salvia stops flowing in your sleep) if you wake up really thirsty, try drinking water before bed. Stop if you’re waking up to pee, but otherwise, it’s a good thing.

Drinking water before bed helps flush your body. Your body digests better during sleep since it’s the only thing your body does. Same thing applies to water. Your kidneys work to flush your body. Your body sends the water through and gives your kidneys time to really flush the impurities out of the body.

2. It helps weight loss.

Okay, so, maybe I’m the only person in the world who gets late night ice cream cravings. But, in case I’m not, water helps kill my late night cravings. I drink about two or three cups of water whenever I have a craving. Occasionally I throw in a slice of lime. Since late night eating is a leading cause of weight gain, this helps stop that habit.

3. Sleep Benefits

Drinking water before bed helps balance vitamins and minerals in your body. By drinking water before bed, your hormone levels become balanced. That helps you relax and therefore sleep better.

4. Boosts metabolism.

Okay, this one happens any time you drink water, but particularly before going to bed when your body is warm under the covers. Your body has to raise the temperature of the water you’re drinking. The colder the water, the more calories your body will burn.

5. Good for your skin.

Your skin regenerates overnight. Adding more water helps restore elasticity to skin, easing wrinkles and adding the ‘glow’ beauty magazines are always touting. It will also help clear up any skin troubles. For instance, acne can be eased with water. Once again, your body has more time to process and helps ease the problem.
