Study: Turmeric and Postmenopausal Women’s Heart Health

Curcumin, the polyphenol in turmeric that gives the its golden hue, according to a 2012 study published by Nutrition Research is as effective in improving the vascular function (heart health) of postmenopausal women as moderate aerobic exercise. The 8-week long study proved that regular ingestion of curcumin and regular aerobic exercise, “The magnitude of improvement in endothelial function to the same extent, suggesting that curcumin may prevent the age-associated decline in endothelial function in postmenopausal women.”

A follow-up study conducted by the American Journal of Hypertension found that the combined effect of curcumin and exercise in postmenopausal women found, “regular endurance exercise combined with daily curcumin ingestion may reduce LV [left ventricular] afterload to a greater extent than monotherapy with either intervention alone in postmenopausal women.” These findings clearly prove that combining exercise with turmeric produces the highest benefit.
