It seems like everywhere you look you can find a different advertisement for some sort of weight loss product. Whether it be pills, fad diets, or one of the most popular options: weight loss drinks. But are these drinks really all they’re cracked up to be or are they nothing more than smoothie powder in pretty packaging?

First things first – we all know there is no miracle pill or drink that will do all the hard work of losing weight for you. Better eating habits and exercise is a must to set the stage for weight loss. That being said, there are drinks that can give an extra boost to your weight loss efforts. The key to getting this right is doing your research and ensuring there is credible evidence backing up the weight loss claims. Luckily, we’ve taken out this step for you providing you with four great weight loss drinks and the evidence to back them up.

The best part about the drinks below? They also help to boost the health of your liver. The liver is a powerhouse organ that has multiple roles such as filtering out toxins, producing bile to aid digestion, and regulating glucose levels. However, if your liver is overworked or not working efficiently, it can dampen weight loss efforts, and also create inflammation that is associated with obesity.

Weight Loss Drinks That Work

Matcha Green Tea Latte

There have been numerous studies done on how green tea can assist with weight loss, and for good reason. But what’s better than green tea? Matcha. One cup of matcha green tea is as powerful as 10 cups of regular, steeped green tea because when you drink matcha, you drink the whole tea plant and not just a brew made from its leaves [1].

The biggest reason why matcha is potent for weight loss is its high amount of antioxidants, especially EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate), a substance that boosts your metabolism and allows for faster weight loss [2].

In order to burn fat, it must first be broken down in the body’s fat cell and then moved into the bloodstream. EGCG can help inhibit an enzyme that breaks down the hormone norepinephrine and when this enzyme is inhibited, the amount of norepinephrine increases. This hormone is used by the nervous system as a signal to the fat cells, telling them to break down fat. Therefore, more norepinephrine leads to a stronger signal being sent to the fat cell and more fat gets broken down.

There are also several studies done about the effectiveness of green tea against liver cancer and other liver diseases [3]. A Japanese study from 2009 found that men who drank five or more cups per day had 37 percent less risk than those who drank one or no cups per day, while women reduced their risk by 50 percent.

It’s important to remember that lattes are made with milk and some sort of sweetener and most stores like Starbucks use whole milk and excessive amounts of sugar. Your best bet is to make one yourself so you can control the ingredients. Here’s a great recipe for fat burning matcha green tea latte.

SLIM Tea From Wild Leaf

Not all tea blends are created equal, and only the best blends use ingredients that have been proven to work at reducing body fat and aiding in weight loss. One prime example of that is Wild Leaf SLIM Tea that uses pu’reh tea and Siberian ginseng to create a weight loss drink above the rest.

Pu’erh is actually made from the same leaves as green tea. They are naturally fermented, and they produce microorganisms that combine with other compounds to aid weight loss efforts [4]. A 2011 Chinese study conducted by Yunnan Agricultural University discovered that pu’erh helped burn belly fat in rats who were fed a high fat diet. It also reduced body weight, bad cholesterol and blood fats [4].

Siberian ginseng, or eleuthero, works with the pu’reh to help increase your weight loss. Eleuthero is well-known as an adaptogen herb, which means it helps the body adapt to stressful situations by improving stamina and endurance. When the stress response is minimized, this leads to less secretion of the stress hormone, cortisol, and therefore fat storage around the belly, which has the most cortisol receptors than anywhere else in the body.

Plus, research has also shown that eleuthero can combat fatigue and improve energy levels [5], which is definitely a crucial piece of the puzzle for someone who lacks the energy or motivation to get to the gym!

Apple Cider Vinegar

In recent years, apple cider vinegar has gained popularity for its numerous health benefits from helping to deal with acne to preventing acid reflux. Two more great benefits: its ability to support the liver for detoxification [6] and its ability to help you lose weight. A 2009 study performed by Japanese scientists found that it can help reduce obesity [7]. They found that the acetic acid, the main component in vinegar, was found to suppress body fat accumulation in animal studies, so human trials were started.

The subjects were randomly assigned to 3 groups of similar body weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. During this 12-week treatment period, the subjects in each group ingested 500 ml daily of a beverage containing either 15 ml of vinegar, 30 ml of vinegar , or 0 ml of vinegar (placebo). Body weight, BMI, visceral fat area, waist circumference, and serum triglyceride levels were significantly lower in both vinegar intake groups than in the placebo group.

What’s the best way for you to use apple cider vinegar? Start by adding a tablespoon of ACV in a glass of water. The water will help soften the taste of the vinegar and allow you to get the benefits quick and easy.

Oolong Tea

Another great tea for weight loss is oolong tea. A six week study performed by Chinese researchers found that oolong tea helped reduce both body fat and weight of the participants [9]. Another study performed with animals published in The Journal of Nutrition in September 2014 found that the polyphenols from oolong, green or black tea helped increase weight loss and fat loss even in the presence of a high-sugar diet. One type of these polyphenols, called catechins, may help keep your metabolism from slowing down as you lose weight, making it easier to keep losing weight and maintain that weight loss.

Another benefit of oolong tea is its caffeine content. A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in November 2009 found that tea containing both catechins and caffeine resulted in more weight loss than consuming either catechins or caffeine alone.

Is Tea Good For Weight Loss?

However, it’s important to do your research and ensure that the tea is backed by scientific evidence and that you’re getting high quality ingredients. Here are some tips on picking a high-quality tea brand (and is the reason that Wild Leaf SLIM tea has been recommended in this article):

  • Look for organic ingredients to help eliminate pesticide exposure
  • Select brands that use loose-leaf or loose-packed whole leaf tea; they are made with higher quality ingredients that have their medicinal properties preserved.  Loosely-packed tea also gives the tea “room to brew,” so even more of its healing qualities can be extracted.
  • Look for the experts behind the blends.  If it’s a naturopathic doctor, herbalist, or tea specialist then you know they’ve done their research and have chosen the ingredients for a specific purpose!
  • Avoid tea bags that are transparent or have windows, as this allows oxidation to occur and reduces shelf life. Tea should also be stored in light-free and air-sealed containers to maintain freshness and potency.
