Recently, the renowned psychiatrist shared an interesting video in which he discloses a phrase that will start the day on a positive note. “When you do that, your subconscious mind begins to look for [the] ‘what are you looking forward to today’,” Dr. Amen explained. “This is very important. People who are negative have lower activity, especially in the prefrontal cortex.”

Despite the psychiatrist’s vast knowledge and education, many weren’t convinced regarding his idea.

Does it matter if I vehemently do not believe it when I say it?” One viewer commented sarcastically. Meanwhile, another questioned whether or not saying the phrase would “make the brain see bad experiences as a good day.”

Experts Explain the Benefits

Dr. Amen acknowledges that the phrase itself may not be life-changing. Instead, he notes that it’s about the mindset and  Healthline confirms that positive affirmations can “activate the reward system in your brain.” As a result, emotional and physical responses can be easier to regulate such as physical pain or emotional distress.

Meanwhile, the NHS notes that positive affirmations can help improve self-esteem and motivation.
