In July 2025, a video showing a Burger King employee in Columbia, South Carolina, operating the restaurant alone for approximately twelve hours went viral. The 25-year-old Nykia Hamilton employee managed the kitchen, counter, drive-thru, dishes, and cleaning without assistance.

The video was recorded by a customer who pointed out that Hamilton was cooking food, preparing sandwiches, and handling orders entirely on her own. The footage spread rapidly on social media. Many viewers expressed disbelief that one employee had been left to run the restaurant under such conditions.

Circumstances Behind the Shift

Hamilton later explained that she had been left alone due to an unexpected staff shortage. A co-worker had quit without notice, leaving her as the only person available to cover the shift. She said she could not walk out because the store needed to stay open. Additionally, she felt responsible for ensuring customers were served.

She described the day as exhausting, with tasks piling up across all areas of the store. Hamilton said she carried out food preparation, handled both front counter and drive-thru service, and cleaned the restaurant on her own.

Family Responsibilities and Workload

Hamilton, a single mother of three, spoke publicly about the challenges of balancing her job with childcare. She said she often worked shifts longer than twelve hours and frequently missed time with her children. According to Hamilton, the demands of the role left little opportunity for family life, but she continued working long hours to provide for her family financially. She noted that her wages did not allow for childcare assistance and that being the sole provider made it challenging to balance home responsibilities with strict job expectations.

Repeated Staffing Issues

The viral shift was not an isolated incident. Hamilton reported that she returned to work the next day and again closed the restaurant largely on her own. She said help eventually arrived, but only late into the day, leaving her responsible for the majority of the workload. Her accounts suggested that staffing shortages were ongoing at the restaurant rather than a one-time occurrence.

Firing After Viral Attention

In August 2025, Burger King employee Hamilton announced on TikTok that she had been fired. She said the reason given was attendance issues, explaining that she was occasionally late to work because of childcare needs. Hamilton stated that her role as a parent had to come first, particularly since her employer did not provide childcare support.

The firing generated debate online, with some supporters arguing that her dedication during the viral shift showed her commitment to the job. Others noted that franchises often enforce attendance rules strictly, regardless of personal circumstances. For Hamilton, the dismissal marked the end of her employment at the restaurant less than a month after gaining national attention.

Corporate Response

After the viral video circulated, Burger King issued a statement. They clarified that company policy requires at least two employees to be present during shifts. The company said no worker should be placed in a position where they must operate an entire restaurant alone. “No team member should ever be left to run a restaurant alone, even for a short period of time. That’s not how we operate and we’re disappointed that our policy, which required more than one team member to work per shift, wasn’t followed.” They explained.

“While we can’t share more on individual personnel matters, we’re focused on making sure every restaurant, whether company or franchise-owned has the staffing and support needed to take care of our team members and deliver the kind of experience our guests expect,” the spokesperson added.

On the subject of Hamilton’s dismissal, Burger King said staffing and employment decisions are handled by franchise owners. Not by the corporate office. The franchise responsible for the Columbia location cited repeated attendance problems as the cause for her termination. Corporate representatives declined to discuss details of Hamilton’s case. They did, however, reiterate that staffing policies should be followed at all franchise locations.

Public Donations and Support

After losing her job, Hamilton created a GoFundMe campaign to help support her family. The fundraiser received widespread attention and gained tens of thousands of contributions. Reports indicated that donations surpassed $60,000 within days, with totals continuing to rise.

On the campaign page, Hamilton described herself as a single mother of three who worked two jobs. She thanked donors for their support. She said she had not expected her life to change so drastically from a viral video but expressed gratitude for the assistance that allowed her to provide for her children.

Mental Health Concerns

Hamilton also spoke about the toll the situation had taken on her mental health. She stated that she was struggling with depression and stress, and that the combined pressures of work, childcare, and sudden public attention had been overwhelming. Nykia Hamilton’s story brought up burnout and mental health among low-wage workers. Others echoed these concerns, pointing out that the demands placed on employees in the fast food sector are often unsustainable.

National Attention for the Burger King Employee

The case drew national attention not only because of Hamilton’s viral attention but also because of the labor issues it represented. Staffing shortages, strict attendance policies, and a lack of childcare assistance remain widespread challenges in the fast food industry. Hamilton’s firing after receiving public praise for her work stirred debate about how much support employees actually receive from corporations and franchise owners.
