Some people are astoundingly creative, turning old objects into works of art. For example, a family in Alaska found an abandoned superyacht and used their creativity to restore the rotting vessel, turning it into a family home. Incredibly, the family documented their project and shared it on YouTube.
Buying an Abandoned Superyacht
Blaine and Janis discovered an abandoned superyacht had been left under a tarp and began rotting. The pair, coincidentally already in search of a boat for their family, took it as an opportunity to create something magnificent.
Time for Adventure
The pair met over 20 years ago, and share a love of superyachts. Although they have lived on land with their children and dogs for many years, they felt compelled to return to the water on a superyacht. They’d had “homes, kids, and dogs,” Blaine explained. “It was time to get back to the water.” Although they were on a budget and anticipated a yacht around 60-feet, they took a chance on the 78-foot abandoned superyacht.
A Long Search
The abandoned superyacht was found in Wrangell, Alaska and looked nothing like the pictures, according to SuperCarBlondie. However, the rotting abandoned superyacht’s condition didn’t deter the pair. Rather, they seized the opportunity to restore the vessel, built in 1969. After all, they had “spent over a year searching for something they could call home,” Janis explained.
Documenting the Abandoned Superyacht Project
They made an offer of CA$200,000, or around $140,000USD, and it was accepted. The abandoned superyacht was theirs, and they had their work cut out for them. They spent the first three days inspecting and documenting the projects they’d need to tackle. They then shared the journey of the abandoned superyacht’s incredible transformation on YouTube.
Abandoned Superyacht YouTube Channel
“We’re a husband and wife team, and we’re taking on a big project: completely refitting our 1969 aluminum trawler, a classic Stephens Bros yacht, all by ourselves,” they explain in the channel’s description. “Join us as we document every step of this DIY journey – from swapping out our Detroit Diesel engines for new Cummins, installing a custom fuel system, setting up lithium batteries and solar panels, to creating a wet exhaust system.”
The Page’s Description
“Whether you’re interested in hands-on boat work, learning about marine systems, or just want to follow along as we bring this beautiful boat back to life, you’re in the right place!” The description concluded, according to Unilad.
Gaining Popularity
Within 2 weeks, the video of the couple’s abandoned superyacht project had over 150,000 views on YouTube. Meanwhile, viewers had mixed reactions. Many were amazed by the incredible transformation, while others felt they’d paid too much and one sarcastic viewer noted the superyacht isn’t abandoned if they paid for it.
Encouraging the Abandoned Superyacht Project
However, much of the feedback has been positive and supportive. “Looks like you took a big chance and it worked out. Great for you ! You have a beautiful yacht. Congratulations you two,” commented a viewer in encouragement.
“So refreshing to see a channel who knows boats!” Exclaimed another. “Good for you and good luck!”
