On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the new pope, making him the first American-born pope in the history of the Catholic Church. He took the name Pope Leo XIV, honoring the legacy of Pope Leo XIII.

Early Life and Calling

Robert Francis Prevost was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois. He comes from a Spanish, French, and Italian background, and was raised in a strong Catholic family. From a young age, he felt a calling to serve God.

He joined the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977 and completed his religious education. He also studied mathematics at Villanova University, earning a degree in 1977.

Missionary and Church Leader

According to Wikipedia, Prevost served as a missionary in Peru for many years. He was known for working closely with local communities and understanding the needs of the poor.

He became bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, in 2015 and later returned to the Vatican when Pope Francis made him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops—a high-ranking role that oversees bishop appointments around the world.
