South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that the research team untilized a bacteria-based technology to capture carbon dioxide and convert it into lycopene. This compound, commonly found in fruits like tomatoes, watermelons, and peppers, boasts exceptional antioxidant properties responsible for the reddish pigment in these fruits and vegetables.

The team’s synthetic biology approach harnesses the power of microorganisms to mimic the natural carbon fixation process found in plants. By utilizing microorganisms as bioreactors, carbon dioxide is transformed into lycopene efficiently and cost-effectively. Through advanced genetic engineering techniques, researchers have enhanced the ability of a bacterium called Rhodopseudomonas palustris to capture carbon, resulting in the production of valuable bio products.
