Footage Highlights The Chaos on Cruise Ship as it ‘Tilts 45 Degrees’ in Atlantic Ocean

A seemingly tranquil cruise turned into a harrowing experience for passengers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas. The luxury vessel, packed with over 5,000 passengers and crew, was sailing from Barcelona to Miami when it encountered a freak weather event off the coast of Tenerife, Spain. What was meant to be a serene Atlantic crossing was disrupted by an unexpected gust of wind that caused the ship to tilt dangerously, reportedly reaching an angle of 45 degrees.

The Unexpected Storm

The ship was struck by a sudden and violent wind gust, with speeds jumping from 46 mph to a staggering 86 mph. This caused chaos throughout the vessel, with drinks and plates flying off tables, and items in the ship’s shops scattering across the floors as if “ransacked by rioters.” The impact was so intense that passengers were left clinging to walls and railings for stability.

Dramatic footage of the incident quickly spread across social media. Videos show passengers struggling to maintain their balance, while shelves and furniture toppled over. One clip, shared on X (formerly Twitter), captured the scene in vivid detail, amassing over 23 million views. “Cruise ship tilted 45 degrees in the Atlantic Ocean,” read one post, sparking a wave of reactions online.

“What’s Going On?” Panic and Calm

Passenger Jonathan Parrish, who was attending a theater show on the cruise ship, described the moment of panic. “There was about five minutes where everyone was wondering what was going on,” he told CBS News. The captain’s prompt announcement, explaining the freak wind gust, helped restore calm among the frightened passengers.

Amid the chaos, one passenger sustained injuries serious enough to require immediate medical attention. The ship diverted to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands to disembark the injured individual for treatment. “We are communicating these changes directly with our guests,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed.

Despite the terrifying experience, the ship’s design ensured it remained afloat and operational. Cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers designed to counteract such extreme tilting. Many online commentators highlighted this, with one noting, “It can tip 45 degrees and still float… it’s pretty safe”. However, this reassurance did little to quell the immediate fears of those onboard.

Royal Caribbean was quick to address the incident, emphasizing the unexpected nature of the wind gust and the cruise ship’s subsequent safe handling. “One of our sailings experienced sudden movement due to a wind gust near Tenerife,” the company said in a statement. They reassured passengers and the public that safety protocols were effectively followed.

Following the unexpected detour to Las Palmas, Explorer of the Seas is now set to resume its journey across the Atlantic. The ship is expected to arrive in Miami within the next two weeks, albeit with a shaken group of passengers.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of the ocean, even for massive, technologically advanced vessels. While cruise ships offer luxury and adventure, they are not immune to the forces of nature. “Keep sleeping on the ocean, the ocean is no game,” one social media user remarked, encapsulating the respect required when venturing onto the vast and unpredictable seas.

Explorer of the Seas will undoubtedly leave its passengers with an unforgettable tale—one of thrills, fear, and ultimately, resilience in the face of nature’s wrath.
