Every year, the non-profit organization Consumer Reports publishes its car reilability rankings. This is aimed at providing unbiased insights on the various manufacturers for anyone looking to buy a new car. The organization analyzes 17 major problem aries, such as electrical glitches and engine issues, drawing on data collected from more than 300,000 vehicles. If you are currently in the market for a car, you may want to go through this list of least reliable cars before deciding on a particular brand.

Rivian

With a measly score of only 18/100, the Rivian is regarded as the worst of the least reliable cars. According to Consumer Reports’ 2025 Reliability Report Card, Rivian was the worst-performing of the lot. Some consumers reported stereo malfunctions, persistent squeaks, and drivetrain faults, specifically on the R1S and R1T models. User reports on various forums also mentioned that there were regular minor issues and long waits to get a service appointment. However, somewhat paradoxically, despite these issues, around 86% of Rivian owners said they would buy another car from the same manufacturer again.

Cadillac scored a little better than Rivian, although its reliability score of 27/100 is nothing to brag about. A recall in April of this year affected almost 600,000 Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicles. The recall included models from 2021 to 2024 due to potential engine failures. Reviews from owners of models such as the XT4 and XT5 often include complaints about issues with road noise and infotainment glitches. Additionally, users of Reddit have voiced their complaints about inconsistent door gaps and misaligned door panels on certain models.

GMC received a reliability score of 33/100, tying with Jeep. Data for GMC’s Sierra and Yukon indicate strong owner satisfaction; however, quality over time currently remains questionable. This is understandable, considering the recall that affected many late-model trucks. According to feedback from owners, the towing ability and rugged styling of the vehicles were some of what drew them to these vehicles. However, the high long-term maintenance costs were among some of the issues raised.

Jeep

Jeep was given a predicted 33/100 reliability score and had to deal with around 72 recalls across FCA platforms. Jeep was also rated one of the most expensive American brands to maintain, with average 10 year maintenance costs estimated to be around $6,470. Models such as the oler Grand Cherokee and Wrangler were also considered to be particularly unreliable. Owners cited issues such as transfer-case failures, electrical glitches, and issues with the suspension. Due to these maintenance costs and issues with reliability, one customer satisfaction study places Jeep among the least reliable cars.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen did only slightly better than Jeep when it comes to unreliable cars, with a predicted reliability at 34/100 and an average price of about $36,255. It also noted 85 days of market supply, which suggests rather underwhelming resales or market demand. While its recall numbers have not been too bad, reports of issues include electronic failures, transmission glitches, and engine malfunctions. Some European outlets even warn prospective buyers about the issues associated with older VW models. Volkswagen has also struggled with perceptions regarding reliability following the 2015 emissions scandal.

Tesla

With an average price of around $41,000, Tesla has been ranked with a reliability score of 36/100. In recent years, the company has suffered several massive recalls. This includes six for the Cybertruck in 204 alone. It’s therefore no wonder that it is ranked so low for reliability. However, despite this, 72% of current owners have said that they will buy another Tesla in the future. Furthermore, Consumer Reports noted that EVs typically have around 42% more issues than combustion models. Yet, the company’s aspirational and cultural appeal seems to have provided it with long-term support from its customers and fan base.

Chevrolet

Sharing GM’s recall list of 34 events, Chevrolet was given a predicted reliability rating of 37/100.  J.D. Power ratings for Chevrolet SUVs such as the Tahoe or Suburban aren’t quite as high as Cadillac’s, however, they still remain respectable in quality scores. However, GM’s engine failure recall has also impacted customers’ confidence in Chevy products. While owners have praised the dependable performance in earlier years, many are currently left feeling frustrated with the recent safety recalls. Some customers have also noted declining fit and finish quality and higher maintenance costs.

Volvo

Consumer studies have consistently ranked Volo in the mid to low tiers for reliability. Consumer Reports gave Volvo a reliability rating of 38/100. Issues cited by customers included expensive diagnostics and complex hybrid systems. Studies on user satisfaction have also noted high repair bills and strained dealer service networks as other issues. However, the market supply is high at 108 days of supply, and the average selling price is $62,960. Furthermore, Volvo still beat Genesis (40/100) and Ford (44/100).
