Built by the Hvar Culture
Radiocarbon dating of wood found at the site puts the settlement around 4,900 BCE, which places it deep in the Neolithic era.
The Hvar culture, a Neolithic society known for its seafaring skills, built the ancient road and the settlement. They lived along the eastern Adriatic coast and used the road to move between the island and the mainland.
The design shows smart use of local materials, as the road stayed strong for millennia, showing how well they built it. The Hvar people clearly understood their environment and used it to their advantage. “This was no simple path—it was a real construction project,” the team said.
