Woman Highlights the ‘Narcissist Stare’ as a Major Red Flag to Watch For

A woman recently released a video on social media warning viewers about the ‘narcissist stare’, which it seems is more common than you may think. Narcissism is an increasingly popular subject on social media these days. This is because more and more people are becoming aware of the real scope of this mental health condition. This has led to people noticing the same patterns of behavior in their partners and family members. Many of them, such as the woman who shared the video, are sharing the red flags they have begun to notice, including the ‘narcissist stare’.

According to helpguide.org., people with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) are “in love with an idealized, grandiose image of themselves. And they’re in love with this inflated self-image precisely because it allows them to avoid deep feelings of insecurity”. One red flag to look out for, according to the woman who posted the video, is the ‘narcissist stare’. She said that looking back, it should have been more apparent to her all along. However, no one talks about it, hence why she decided to share her personal observations.

The stare has been described by the woman as a “cold piercing stare that cuts right through you”. She went on to say that it feels almost inhuman, calculating and analyzing you instead of connecting with you as a person. The woman, who goes by the alias “M” on social media, theorizes that narcissists might possibly do it to make you feel uneasy, to test your boundaries, and to try to find ways to manipulate you. “It’s a way to intimidate you, to throw you off balance, kind of making you second guess yourself”, M told her 71,000 followers. She added  that it’s as if the person is trying to look through you, making you feel exposed, small, and confused.

Many people online resonated with her post, sharing their own experiences and stories in return. While many had forgotten about the stare, the way she described it brought up memories fro some that gave them the chills. On woman recalled how her ex boyfriend would “scan me up and down to intimidate me. The stare would turn to a look of contempt.” Another woman called it her boyfriend’s “dead eyes”. While they may have had different names for the stare, they agreed it was something that couldn’t be unseen once you had seen it.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is distinguished by an inflated feeling of self-importance, in which individuals overestimate their abilities and crave adulation. Theyoften give priority to power, beauty, or success and believe they are entitled to preferential treatment. Their social circles are restricted to those they regard as significant or special, and they use others for personal benefit. Arrogance is a prevalent feature, as is a lack of empathy, which leads to indifference to the views of others. They need continual adoration and suffer from envy, either feeling superior or assuming that others are jealous of them.
