Childbirth is no laughing matter and is one of the most painful experiences any woman could endure. However, some moms have an easier time compared to others. Can you imagine giving birth to a baby that’s almost 20lbs? That’s essentially the same as giving birth to a sledgehammer. Over the years, some of the most impressively sized babies have been born into the world. However, we believe these record-breaking babies are some of the biggest babies ever born.
Anna Bates – 23lbs Baby, 1879
Anna Bates was a very tall Canadian woman, measuring at 7′ 5½”. Considered to be very intelligent excelling in literature and music. Later in life, Bates had given birth to two stillborn children. Going into labor for the second time on January 15, 1879. Finally, giving birth to her 23.12lbs son that measured to be 30 inches tall. Her child was considered to be one of the biggest babies born during that time. Unfortunately, her child was only able to survive for 11 hours afterward. (1)
Hananudlin and Ani – 19lbs Baby, 2009
The parents of Akbar, Hananudlin, and Ani, gave birth to him weighing at 19lbs and 2 ounces in 2009. Akbar measured to be about 24.4 inches in length. However, because Akbar’s mom was diagnosed with diabetes, doctors performed a complicated 40-minute long cesarean section delivery. (3)
Tatyana Khalina – 17lbs, 2004
Tatyana Khalina was 43 years old when she gave birth to her daughter, Nadia. Weighing at 17lbs and 7 ounces, Tatyana blames the size of her child on her poor eating habits during pregnancy. Because her family is so poor her diet consisted of potatoes, noodles, and tomatoes. Tatyana had a cesarean section surgery due to how large her child was. (4)
Francisca dos Santos – 17lbs, 2005
Francisca dos Santos gave birth to her 17lbs son in Salvador Brazil from a cesarean section delivery. Ademilton dos Santos is considered to be the biggest infant born in Brazil to this day. Francisca was diagnosed with diabetes before being pregnant and states that she was concerned for his well being. Doctors attribute her diabetes to her son’s oversized appearance. (5)
Cathleen Abels – 16lbs , 2007
In 2007, Cathleen Abels gave birth to her 16lbs daughter in the Tygerberg Hospital located in Cape Town. Although, the doctors first thought Abels was carrying twins this whole time. To their surprise, the staff reports that Abel’s baby, Chesner, is the biggest baby born at that hospital. In adddition, Cathleen’s daughter remained perfectly healthy and was able to go home the next day. (6)
Janet Johnson – 16lbs, 2011
JaMichael Brown is reportedly known to be the biggest baby born in the entire state of Texas. Weighing at 16lbs and 1 ounce, Janet Johnson believes that her gestational diabetes contributed to the size of her son. Doctors put JaMichael into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as he was having troubles with eating as well as breathing. (7)
Sosefina Tagula – 16lbs, 2013
In 2013, Sosefina Tagula had delivered her 16lbs baby, Sammisano Joshua Talai Otuhiva, in California. However, Tagula’s child was born a little earlier than expected. She believes that he would’ve weighed a lot more had he waited for his actual due date. Tagula reports that even at 5 months old, her baby weighs an incredible 25lbs. (8)
Jade Packer – 15lbs , 2013
21-year-old, Jade Packer had a very hard time giving birth to her 15lb son at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. In fact, doctors were unaware of how large Packer’s son was going to be as they tried natural birth. Once George King’s head revealed itself, they gave Packer’s baby a 10% chance at survival. Because of how large Goerge’s body was, his shoulders got stuck, and wasn’t able to breathe for 5 minutes. King was then transferred to St Michaels’s Hospital where he was put into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. (9)

Nandini – 15lbs, 2016
19-year-old Nandini had given birth to the biggest baby ever recorded in India since 2016. Her daughter was delivered by a cesarean section surgery as Nandini was 207 lbs at the time of pregnancy. Doctors were worried that Nandini’s diabetes could play a crucial part in her daughter’s health after delivery. However, to everyone’s relief, the child and mother were in good health. Additionally, no extra precautions were needed and Nandini was able to leave the government-run hospital in Karnataka, India. (10)
