Before You Build

Tiny house laws in the United States can vary by state, county, and city! If you’re interested in the benefits of tiny house living as a way to simplify your lifestyle, as a cute mini vacation, or even as a “granny pod”, you’ll need to be aware of the zoning laws and building codes in your area.

For example, in Illinois, tiny houses are permitted in campgrounds, RV parks, and private property. If they’re on wheels, they must be registered as a recreational trailer and abide by trailer regulations. And they’re completely banned in Chicago. For an overview of the tiny house laws in your state, check out Tiny Society. For more details, go to your local city hall.
