Amish Apple Scrapple is just one of the many things Dutch Pennsylvania is known for. The surprisingly delicious 4-step recipe provides an exciting breakfast item, to liven your morning routine. However, it does need time to set so it’s best to do the prep the night before.
Ingredients for Amish Apple Scrapple

While the recipe is easy to make, Amiah Apple Scrapple does have a large list of ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 3/4 pound bulk pork sausage
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 4 tablespoons butter, divided
- 1/2 cup diced apple, unpeeled
- 3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon ground sage
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 3 cups water, divided
- 3/4 cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Maple syrup

Step 1 of Amish Apple Scrapple

Amish Apple Scrapple takes about 10 minutes. However, the prep time is much longer, at 80 minutes. As such, you want to give yourself ample time to prepare the dish. The first step is to cook the sausage and onion over medium heat in a large skillet. Then set the skillet aside when the sausage has thoroughly browned and save 2 tablespoons of the drippings.
The Second Step

Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the drippings and mix in the apple, thyme, sage, and pepper. Then cook on low heat until the apple is tender. This should take about 5 minutes.

Remove the mixture from heat and mix in the sausage and onions. Set aside for later.
The Fourth Step

Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a “large and heavy” saucepan and slowly add the cornmeal, salt, and any remaining water. Stir constantly until the saucepan returns to a boil then reduce the heat to a simmer and cover for one hour, stirring occasionally.
Step 5

When the hour is up, grease an 8×4-in. loaf pan and stir in the cornmeal and sausage mixtures. Chill in the fridge, covered, for 8 hours.

The Final Step of Amish Apple Scrapple

It will be easy to finish the last step of the dish, now that the Amish Apple Scrapple has cooled and solidified. First, cut the Amish Apple Scrapple into 1/2-inch thick slices and sprinkle both sides with flour. Then heat the remaining butter on medium and cook until the slices have browned.
While Amish Apple Scrapple is an interesting and unique take on a pork sausage breakfast dish, it’s not the only unique item on the menu.
