6 Homemade Frozen Dog Treat Recipes to Try This Summer

Summer is the season for dogs and their owners to thrive. Instead of bundling up for the necessary daily walks through the rain and cold, the weather is beautiful and inviting for people and their pets to enjoy together. Walks are just the tip of the iceberg as pups are taken for park dates, picnics, and games of fetch at the beach. While spending so much time outdoors, it’s important to stay cool and hydrated, and that goes for our fur babies as well! Be sure to pack water and cooling foods on these outdoor trips. Dogs bring so much joy into the owner’s lives, and to try and pay that back, it’s time to show them some extra love with these frozen dog treat recipes.

These recipes all take only a few minutes to whip up, and they contain healthy ingredients full of benefits for our precious pups. They look so delicious; you might be tempted to give these “pupsicles” a lick yourself.

6 Homemade Frozen Dog Treats  

Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Treats  

With only three, simple ingredients, you can create a wholesome treat for your pup filled with probiotics, protein, and healthy fats. If you don’t have molds, you can always use ice cube trays. 

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup (8oz/120g) plain yogurt (no sweetness or flavors) 
  • 1/2 cup (4oz/120g) natural peanut butter, smooth 
  • 1 ripe banana 

Instructions 

  1. In a small bowl, mash up the banana until it’s smooth. 
  1. Stir in the yogurt and peanut butter, and mix until evenly combined. 
  1. Spoon into dog bone molds (or ice cube trays). Fill evenly and smooth the top. 
  1. Tap the molds or trays against the counter to ensure there are no air bubbles and the mixture is evenly distributed. 
  1. Freeze for a minimum of 5 hours or even overnight. 
  1. To remove, tap the molds or trays on the counter to loosen then turn out. If you have any trouble, quickly run the mold under warm water to help the treats release. 
  1. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. 

Yogurt and Berries Dog Treats 

High in calcium, protein, and antioxidants, these treats filled with yogurt and berries are healthy, sweet, and are sure to become a dog’s favorite. 

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup (8oz/120g) plain yogurt 
  • 10 strawberries, diced 
  • 20 blueberries 

Instructions 

  1. In your dog treat mold or ice cube tray, sprinkle in your strawberries and blueberries. 
  1. Spoon in the yogurt. Fill evenly and smooth the top. 
  1. Tap the molds on the counter to ensure there are no air bubbles and the mixture is evenly distributed. 
  1. Freeze for a minimum of 5 hours or overnight. 
  1. To remove, tap the trays on the counter to loosen then turn out. If you have any trouble, quickly run the mold under warm water to help the treats release. 
  1. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Pumpkin Banana Pup Pops Hypoallergenic Dog Treat 

 Be sure to use pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie mix for this recipe. The latter will add a lot of extra sugar and other ingredients to this treat. You can also swap the banana for mashed cantaloupe, blueberries, and kiwis.  

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup plain non-fat yogurt 
  • 1 (15 oz) can of pumpkin puree  
  • 1 teaspoon honey 
  • 1 ripe banana 

Instructions 

  1. Add the banana and pumpkin puree to your blender and mix until it’s well-combined. If you don’t have a blender, you can mix by hand using a fork, especially if you use a nice ripe banana. 
  1. Combine the yogurt and mashed banana/pumpkin mix in a large bowl. Add the honey. Stir until the mixture is smooth. 
  1. Spoon the mixture into silicone candy molds or ice cube trays. 
  1. Freeze overnight, then pop out to serve. 

Chicken Parsley Frozen Dog Treats 

Here’s a treat rich in flavor and low in sugar with two layers, one of chicken stock and one of peanut butter mixed with parsley. Who says frozen dog treats can’t be gourmet? 

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup chicken stock 
  • 1 cup peanut butter 
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves 

Instructions 

  1. In a small bowl, combine peanut butter and parsley; set aside. 
  1. Divide chicken broth evenly into a silicone ice cube tray, filling the tray halfway full. Place into freezer and freeze until set, about 1 hour. 
  1. Spoon peanut butter mixture into the tray, filling the tray full. Place into freezer and freeze until hard, at least 4 hours. 

DIY Frozen Watermelon Dog Treats 

Watermelon is refreshing and hydrating, especially when frozen with coconut milk and enjoyed on a hot summer day. Be sure to remove the watermelon seeds first; they may cause intestinal blockage in dogs. To make this recipe easier, use seedless watermelons.  

Ingredients 

  • A quarter of a watermelon 
  • One can of coconut milk 

Instructions 

  1. Scoop out about 1/4 of the melon. 
  1. Blend together with the can of coconut milk – add more watermelon if you want a darker pink. 
  1. Pour into ice cube tray and freeze for five hours or overnight.

DIY Chicken Pupsicles for Dogs 

Peas and carrots are full of health benefits for dogs but you can swap them for other dog-friendly veggies, herbs, and fruits. To avoid the mess of melting drips, gives these treats to your puppies while enjoying the outdoors. 

Ingredients 

  •  14 oz can of chicken broth  
  • 1/2 cup of peas 
  • 1/2 cup of chopped carrots 

Instructions 

  1. Fill each Popsicle mold about halfway with chicken broth. 
  1. Sprinkle some peas and carrots into each mold. 
  1. Pour the rest of the broth to fill each mold, leaving a little bit of room for the Popsicle stick. 
  1. Freeze for 2–3 hours. 
  1. Let your dogs enjoy these outside outside or place the pupsicle in a bowl.
