‘I Can’t Stay Quiet’: Pope Leo XIV’s Brother Joins Critique of Trump’s Policies

In a surprising move, Pope Leo XIV’s brother has spoken out against former U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions. He said, “I can’t stay quiet,” and made it clear that he disagrees with how Trump handled certain issues, especially immigration. This comes just days after Pope Leo XIV made his own comments. While the pope said countries have the right to protect their borders, he also asked leaders to treat people with kindness.

Now, with his brother joining the conversation, it’s clear that even those close to the pope feel strongly about these matters. The Church is facing new pressure to speak clearly on issues of justice, leadership, and human rights.

A Family Split on Beliefs and Politics

Pope Leo XIV recently said that parts of Trump’s policies reflect Catholic teachings. He pointed to Trump’s support for religious freedom and his views on abortion. However, he also warned that leaders should never forget to treat others with care and respect.

His brother, however, didn’t hold back. Speaking to Italian reporters, he said, “I can’t stay quiet when kindness is being pushed aside just to keep control.” While he respects the pope, he doesn’t think the Church should support Trump in any way.

This shows a deeper problem. Many people in the Church are unsure how to talk about politics while staying true to their faith. Pope Leo XIV is trying to stay balanced, but his brother believes the Church needs to speak up more strongly.

Faith and Politics Collide

Pope Leo XIV, who is still new in his role, has already taken a different approach than past popes. He speaks more openly about world issues. When asked about Trump’s policies, he said every country has the right to protect its borders, but he also reminded leaders to stay fair and kind.

His brother, however, wasn’t happy with this middle-ground view. He believes the Church should do more to stand up for people who are being treated unfairly. He says Trump’s actions, especially toward immigrants, go against what the Church teaches.

Trump’s time as president often clashed with Catholic values. While some Church members liked his views on religion and abortion, many disagreed with how he talked about people from other countries. Pope Leo XIV tried to offer a careful view, but now his brother has made it clear that he wants a stronger message.

For example, the separation of families at the U.S.–Mexico border and the travel bans targeting majority-Muslim nations drew widespread criticism from both religious and secular communities. Many Catholic leaders condemned these actions, saying they failed to respect human dignity and the rights of vulnerable populations.

Critics argued that while national security is important, the way these policies were enforced often caused unnecessary harm and trauma. Pope Leo XIV’s own remarks seemed to acknowledge this tension, highlighting the need for leaders to choose compassion over fear, even when faced with complex political challenges.

A Rare Public Statement From a Papal Relative

It’s very rare for a pope’s family member to speak in public, especially about Church matters. But Pope Leo XIV’s brother felt he had to say something. He didn’t attack the pope directly, but he did say that the Church needs to be clearer about where it stands.

His message connected with many people. They agree that the Church should do more than make quiet, careful comments. They want leaders who speak clearly and stand up for what’s right.

So far, the Vatican hasn’t said anything about the brother’s comments. But people close to the pope say he still believes in his message, that leaders can protect their countries, but they must never lose their sense of compassion.

A Turning Point for the Church

This moment highlights a bigger issue for the Catholic Church. Many believers want their leaders to take clear stands on justice, even if it means going against powerful figures. Pope Leo XIV wants to keep the Church united and peaceful, but his brother believes now is the time to speak more boldly.

Younger members of the Church, especially, are asking for stronger leadership. They want their faith to stand up for people in need and against unfair treatment. Some say it’s no longer enough for the Church to stay neutral.

Pope Leo XIV continues to try to bring people together, but his brother’s comments show that many want stronger action, not just careful words.

When Speaking Out Matters Most

When Pope Leo XIV’s brother said, “I can’t stay quiet,” he sent a powerful message. He showed that even those close to Church leadership feel the need to speak out during hard times.

The pope will likely continue on his path of thoughtful leadership, but his brother’s statement reminds us that sometimes, staying silent can send the wrong message. In times of injustice, speaking up becomes an act of faith.
