11 Signs You May Be Suffering From Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a cancer that most of us have probably never heard of – and that makes most of us fairly lucky. It is a fast-growing and deadly cancer that begins as a growth of cells in the mesothelium. This is the thin layer of tissue that covers several of our internal organs. The most common place for mesothelioma to occur is in the tissue around the lungs, known as pleural mesothelioma, but it can also occur in tissues in the abdomen, heart, and testicles. The most common reason why this cancer develops in the first place? Asbestos exposure. This is everything you should know about this dangerous cancer, including the most common 11 signs of mesothelioma.

Who is Most at-Risk?

As already mentioned, the number one reason why people develop mesothelioma is due to being around asbestos. Asbestos is a natural mineral with strong, heat-resistent fibers. It was often used in insulation, brakes, shingles, flooring, and various other products. When it first began being used, no one knew how dangerous it was. It seemed like a great way to build fire-resistent homes and buildings. Not long after, however, people began to get cancer – primarily those who worked with asbestos and were therefore in direct contact with it. People who have been directly exposed to asbestos have the highest risk of developing mesothelioma, however, those who live with these people are also at risk. Other risk factors include a family history of mesothelioma and having received radiation therapy to the chest.

There are many symptoms of mesothelioma. While they may not necessarily mean you have this illness, it is important to speak to a doctor if you notice these changes to your health. This is especially if you have been exposed to asbestos or have any of the other previously mentioned risk factors. These are the 11 most common signs of mesothelioma.

1. Chest Pain

The most common symptom of pleural mesothelioma is chest pain, which may be accompanied by painful coughing and shortness of breath. This is because of the growth of the cancer in the tissues lining the lungs. It not only causes pain but puts pressure in the chest cavity.

2. Lumps Under the Skin on the Chest

A noticeable lump or swelling under the skin on the chest is a potential indication of pleural mesothelioma. Again, this is because of the potential tumors growing in the tissues lining your lungs.

3. Tiredness

Unexplained fatigue and weakness can often be a symptom of both pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. It is important to note that fatigue is a highly generalized symptom. In fact, fatigue is a symptom of at least 20-30 other illnesses and chronic conditions. If you have this symptom, it is important that you pay attention and write down your other symptoms, as well, so that your doctor will have an easier time pin-pointing what the actual problem is.

4. Weight Loss Without Trying

In some cases, mesothelioma can lead to unintended weight loss despite maintaining normal eating habits. Again, unexplained weight loss is a general symptom that can accompany many conditions. It is in particular a symptom of many different types of cancer. Again, pay attention to any other symptoms you may have in addition to this one.

5. Belly Pain

Peritoneal mesothelioma may cause abdominal pain, which can be persistent and severe. This is because the tumors are growing in the tissues lining the abdomen.

Accumulation of fluid in the abdomen can lead to noticeable swelling, a symptom common in peritoneal mesothelioma. Again, peritoneal mesothelioma means that the cancer is present in the tissues lining the abdomen. Make sure that you are persistent so that belly pain and/or swelling doesn’t get written off as something else.

7. Nausea

Because peritoneal mesothelioma is in the lining of the abdomen, it is common to feel nauseous or experience frequent bouts of sickness. That being said, nausea is another highly general symptom. Be sure to clarify what other symptoms you are experiencing with your doctor.

8. Trouble Breathing

Pericardial mesothelioma, affecting tissue around the heart, often leads to difficulty in breathing and chest pains. If you are experiencing chest pain, you should speak to your doctor as soon as possible. If it is cancer, you will want to know sooner rather than later. The same goes for the warning signs of cardiac arrest.

9. Trouble Swallowing

As pleural mesothelioma spreads and puts pressure on structures in the chest, it can cause difficulty in swallowing. This is because as the tumors grow, they press against the surrounding tissues and organs, such as the esophagus.

10. Pain Caused by Pressure on Nerves and Spinal Cord

There is only so much space in your body – everything is designed to fit just right. If tumors start growing on your lungs or heart, they will start putting pressure on other parts of your body as they take up more and more space. The spreading of pleural mesothelioma in the chest can result in pain caused by pressure on nerves and the spinal cord.

11. Buildup of Fluid in the Chest

As tumors grow, so does fluid accumulation. Pleural mesothelioma can lead to the buildup of fluid in the chest, causing a condition known as pleural effusion, which can make breathing difficult. Again, this is because the tumors and the additional fluid are taking up too much space, not leaving enough for the lungs to be able to contract and expand properly.

As already mentioned, we’ve known for quite some time now that there is a direct link between asbestos and cancer. Researchers first started noting that the substance caused health problems in the 1930s, though the link between asbestos and cancer wasn’t discovered until 1942. It was widely accepted that asbestos was dangerous to our health by 1949. However, the asbestos industry continued to ignore, bury, and alter negative research reports until 1960. Thankfully, they did not get away with these actions.

Since then, a vast number of mesothelioma lawsuits have been filed against many companies for asbestos use and practices. In 2024 alone in the United States, over 1,900 lawsuits were initiated. Some of the most notable of these included against Johnson & Johnson for their talc-based products as well as a jury award of $2.2 million in Illinois. These lawsuits have been crucial in holding companies accountable for asbestos exposure, and most importantly for providing financial assistance to the mesothelioma patients affected.

Talking With A Lawyer About Mesothelioma and Asbestos

If you have mesothelioma or another cancer due to asbestos exposure, you must know that you have rights and can take legal action. When discussing your case with a lawyer, approach the conversation armed with relevant information and all the questions you can think of. Firstly, make sure you inquire about the lawyer’s specialization in asbestos litigation and their experience in handling mesothelioma cases. This is important to ensure you are working with someone who can actually help you. Additionally, you may need to ensure you understand the lawyer’s ability to file a lawsuit in another state, province, or region, as well as their compensation structure and examples of previous mesothelioma cases that they have handled. Don’t leave anything off the table, including concerns related to cost, potential out-of-pocket expenses, and travel requirements during the legal process.

The Bottom Line

Mesothelioma is an awful disease that is sadly fairly preventable. Too often, negligent companies disregard the safety of their employees, clients, or customers in favor of their bottom line. Understanding the signs of mesothelioma can help you to get the medical attention you need as early as possible. The earlier you begin treatment, the better the outcomes will be. The decision to hire a mesothelioma lawyer is deeply impactful, seeking legal advice from firms with a successful track record in representing individuals exposed to asbestos, as well as considering initial consultations to gauge comfort and compatibility, can ultimately guide the selection of the most suitable attorney for addressing mesothelioma-related legal concerns. If you or a loved one has been affected by mesothelioma and asbestos exposure, don’t be afraid to seek the justice that you rightfully deserve.
